Chilmark continues to enjoy the mild winter weather. There is some unusual activity in the natural world — geese are making lots of noise in the mornings, the songbirds are loudly making themselves heard, lots of spring flowers are well above ground already, and there is some restlessness noticeable in humankind as well! What does it all foretell?

We send condolences to the family and friends of Arthur W. Danielson, who died on Jan. 20 in Florida. Dan was well known in Chilmark for the many years that he was a part of the large and popular Flanders family. He was blessed with a long life and successes in his career choices. His son, David, and his former wife, Hope Frances Flanders, both of Northampton, survive him.

Congratulations to Frank and Judy LoRusso of South Road, who traveled to San Francisco in January to welcome their granddaughter, Stella. She was born on Dec. 30 to Jennifer LoRusso and Joel Glickman. The family will be back in Chilmark for the summer months. We all look forward to meeting Stella. Cheers from us all!

Thomas Nash, grandson of Everett Poole and the late Virginia Poole, who speaks capable Chinese, is spending the spring semester of his senior high school year as an exchange student in Beijing. His family entertained an exchange student from Beijing during the fall semester who enjoyed a Christmas in Chilmark. Thomas is currently traveling in China with his host student and will continue his studies there until summer.

If you would like to speak Chinese, the Chilmark library has what you need. They now have a program called Mango Languages that offers instruction in six languages. The programs are fun and easy and can help you to learn or relearn languages. As an introduction to this new program the library is declaring February and March the time to learn or brush up on your French language skills. The Wednesday evening program will be an informal conversation class led by Teresa Dunn, French teacher from the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School. Along with conversation in French, there will be French cheeses, breads and sparkling water. The festivities begin at 5:30 p.m. and at 7 p.m. there will be a movie with a French connection. The first program will be Feb. 8 and will be held every Wednesday through March 28. The first movie with a French twist will be To Catch a Thief. If you have questions, please call the library at 508-645-3360 or check the Web site.

We send condolences to the family and friends of Sandra Hillman, who died on Jan. 30 peacefully but unexpectedly in Greenwich. Sandra had many friends in Chilmark, where she lived for many years and was known for her sincere interest in the conservation and protection of the natural world of Chilmark. Her daughter, Elsie Hillman Green, and her son, Howard B. Hillman Jr., and their families survive her.

Chilmark town clerk Jennifer Christ reminds us of the upcoming presidential primary election on March 6 at the community center from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Another reminder from town hall to all those who have nomination papers out: They are due back in town hall on March 7 by 5 p.m.

The Chilmark Democratic committee will meet on Feb. 18 at the town hall to make plans to get out the vote for the primary and the upcoming elections. They invite all like-minded voters to join them.

We send hearty, happy birthday wishes to Bette Carroll, who turned 89 on Jan. 30. She was entertained at a family gathering hosted by her grandson, Marshall, and his wife, Katie, at their South Road home. Bette is an active member of the Chilmark community and we all wish her a good year to come! Cheers from us all!

Please remember that the special town meeting to make decisions regarding the Tea Lane Farm will be on Feb. 13 at 7:30 p.m. at the community center.

The Friends of the Chilmark Library are showing the movie Little Women tonight at the library. They offer a free movie every Friday night in winter that includes free popcorn and drinks. The film begins at 7 p.m.
