Jessica Burnham recently posted pictures on Facebook of snowdrops blooming. When I came home that same afternoon I found I had a lone purple crocus of my own in bloom. The next day they were covered with snow, but no worry. They were okay, as that afternoon the temperature rose to 50 degrees.

Happy Birthday to all who celebrated their day this past week. Big balloons go out to Liam Decker, who celebrated his day Feb. 9; Tomori Buchanan-Jimo, Feb. 10; Amanda Moraes and Maksim Pachico, Feb. 11; Sophia Decker and John Habekost Jr., Feb. 12; Amadine Muniz, Feb. 13; Nathan Cuthbert and Devin Hill, Feb. 15, and to Jackson Pachico, who celebrated his day Feb. 16.

I know a lot of people love watching the Westminster Dog Show; I am one of them. Cathy Chase and Mary Filault attended the show itself and had front-row seats. They posted lots of pictures of all the dogs they saw and even got to pet. It looks like they had a great time. I don’t know how they could resist coming home with a few dogs.

The Martha’s Vineyard Island Weddings magazine has just launched an exciting new Web site. To celebrate the magazine is offering a great giveaway for one lucky bride-to-be. Contest details are at mvislandweddings.com. Click on the Color Adventure notice on the home page.

The Federated Church of Edgartown will host a Mardi Gras dinner on Saturday, Feb. 18 at 6 p.m. in the Parish Hall. Enjoy some Cajun fun and support unity with a “down-Island” jambalaya dinner, New Orleans king cake, music, beads, masks and prizes. Costumes are optional, but a good idea. The person who wears the best costume will win a door prize. Tickets are $10, $5 for kids and $25 for a family, and are sold at the door. Some of the draw prizes up for grabs include a night at the Kelley House and dinner for two at the Newes, an Island Spirit kayak tour for two with Black Dog T-shirts and hats, jewelry by Ronni Simon, a two-week membership to the Mansion House health club and a Bryn Walker gift certificate, a Douglas Peckham original painting and easel from EduComp, a subscription to Martha’s Vineyard and Home and Garden magazines, an organic duo wine package from Your Market, plus a mystery prize. The Martha’s Vineyard Center for Living provides a round-trip medical taxi from Woods Hole to various medical appointments in Falmouth, Mashpee, Sandwich and Hyannis. This service has become increasingly popular with clients over the age of 55, who pay a significantly reduced rate for the service. In order to keep the service affordable, the Center for Living applied for a grant. However, those grant funds are now nearly depleted, with six months remaining in this fiscal year. For more information about how you can help or donate money to the service, please call Center for Living director Leslie Clapp or mail donations to MV Center for Living, Box 1729, Vineyard Haven, MA 02568. All gifts are tax-deductible and greatly appreciated.

I helped deliver roses and other bouquets up-Island on Tuesday afternoon. I know nothing about the up-Island roads or streets. We delivered three bouquets in the deep woods — almost to the end of the earth, it seemed. Thank goodness for the repair men who were working on houses close by the ones we needed to find.

Enjoy the long weekend and keep the home candles burning.
