The second of the Sail Martha’s Vineyard dinner and lecture series at the Black Dog Tavern takes place on Wednesday, Feb. 22, at 6 p.m. The speaker is Dan O’Connor from Life Raft and Survival Equipment Co. located in Tiverton, RI.
Mr. O’Connor’s talk is titled Safety at Sea. His presentation will focus on what saved the crew members from the s/v Rambler during the 2011 Fastnet Race.
In a run-up to that race the 21-member-crew had taken part in advanced man overboard and safety training. The training consisted of a thorough inspection of safety equipment on-shore as well as a five-hour training session at sea.
On August 15, in the frigid waters off the coast of Ireland, this training was put to the test after the Rambler lost its keel in 15 foot waves and capsized. All 21 crew members were thrown overboard. Fortunately, everyone survived.
The cost of dinner and the lecture is $20.
