Vineyard sports teams took home a pair of stellar postseason wins Tuesday afternoon, with girls’ basketball and girls’ hockey each picking up a first-round state tournament victory.

After a last-minute qualification for the tournament, girls’ basketball defeated Ashland 49-45 in an away game. They will play either Randolph or East Bridgewater at home on Thursday at 4 p.m.; look for more coverage in Friday’s Gazette.

In its first playoff game in the program’s history, the hockey team soundly defeated visiting Dennis-Yarmouth 5-0 before a full home crowd. Junior goalie Texe Craig had her second shutout of the season, while senior Celia Mercier scored twice with one assist. Sophomore Callie Jackson, junior Kassidy Bettencourt and freshman Aubrey Ashmun also scored for the Vineyard. The girls travel to Canton on Friday to play fourth-seeded Norwood.

Playoff action continues tomorrow at home as the number-two seeded boys’ basketball team takes on Dedham at the regional high school at 4 p.m.
