History Lab

The Martha’s Vineyard Museum has begun work to transform its current kids’ space into an interactive history lab for children and families to enjoy year round. Following a generous grant from the Leavens Foundation, the museum staff has begun planning the new space, which will open to the public this summer.

The history lab will give children of all ages an opportunity to experience hands-on history, storytelling and song, arts and crafts and much more relating to life on Martha’s Vineyard. Stations will be set up around the room with displays, touchables and activities, augmented by interactive exhibits, student-generated interpretations of Vineyard history and artifact discovery on a touch-screen computer. Each station will illustrate the lives of Vineyard children and adults at work and play and show several aspects of Island life. In addition to the lab, which will be a permanent space at the museum, the changing exhibitions will now be enhanced with more interactive features.

Members and guests are invited to the unveiling of the lab at the museum’s summer opening reception on Friday, June 15.
