Mites Skate to Title

Winter sports success continued even for the youngest of Vineyard hockey teams, with the Martha’s Vineyard Mites winning the 2012 Needham B Tournament championship last weekend in Needham.

The team was undefeated in the tournament, winning all three of its qualifying games, against Needham, Milton and Winchester, despite the extra challenge of playing on an Olympic-sized sheet of ice.

The Mites met Winchester again in the championship game, and played to a tie game with two minutes remaining. Will Bruguiere and Liam Marek then netted a goal apiece to give the Vineyard a 4-2 win. Dylan Biggs was rock solid in net in his second tournament appearance. Oliver Lively and Riley Sylvia played goal in the team’s earlier games.

The team will play a 12-0-1 Nantucket squad, with whom they tied in their previous meeting, in its next matchup.
