West Tisbury voters will go to the polls next Thursday to decide whether to allow the sale of beer and wine at restaurants in town and at special events.

The annual town election is April 12; polling hours are from noon to 8 p.m. at the town public safety building. There are no contests for elected office this year; selectman Jeffrey (Skipper) Manter 3rd is running unopposed for a fourth three-year term.

Question 2 on the ballot would allow the town selectmen to grant licenses for the sale of beer and wine to restaurants with a capacity of 50 patrons or more, provided the alcohol is served with a meal. The ballot initiative also would allow the town to issue one-day licenses for the sale of beer and wine. Selectmen are still crafting regulations for both licenses, and if the question is approved on Thursday, approval of the regulations will be the last hurdle to clear before restaurants may sell beer and wine.

Three restaurants would qualify for beer and wine licenses: State Road Restaurant, the Lambert’s Cove Inn and the Plane View at the airport.

Three other questions appear on the ballot. Voters will be asked to exempt the debt from the provisions of Proposition 2 1/2 for borrowing $1.5 million for the new library, and in a separate question they will be asked to override Proposition 2 1/2 to borrow $3 million to repave nearly all the town roads.

Voters will also be asked to weigh in on the nonbinding question about whether to build a roundabout at the blinker intersection in Oak Bluffs. Four other towns also have the question on their ballots this spring.
