Chilmark is getting in gear for the upcoming town meeting and elections to town offices. Wendy Weldon has been hard at work organizing the Massachusetts Estuary Project studies for the town of Chilmark. One is for Squibnocket, Menemsha, Nashaquitsa and Stonewall Ponds and the other is for Chilmark Pond. These studies are to be voted on at the annual town meeting on April 23 and will be on the ballot at town election April 25. There will be a question and answer session at a public meeting on April 10 upstairs in town hall. Representatives of the Massachusetts Estuary Project, Dr. Brian L. Howes and Roland Samimy, will be there to give details and answer questions. A fund-raising effort is underway to raise one half of the town’s cost to fund these studies.

Welcome home to Emmett and Kathy Carroll who are back at their Middle Road home after an enjoyable stay in Florida.

Mark your calendars for Wednesday, April 11 at 5:30 p.m. The program at the Chilmark Library will be a performance and talk by Alberto de Almar, who is world-renowned flamenco guitar master. His credentials include teaching and playing with many other well known musicians. He will discuss the history of the flamenco style and demonstrate the techniques. All are welcome at no cost. The Friends of the Chilmark Library sponsor the program.

The free Friday movie tonight at the library is the movie National Velvet shown at 7 p.m. with free popcorn and drinks.

We send condolences to the family and many friends of Al Hurwitz, who died on March 24 in Los Angeles. He lived his life with enthusiasm to the end and many will long enjoy their memories of this delightful man.

April 21 is the 20th annual Earth Day Beach Clean-up Day sponsored by the Vineyard Conservation Society. Three Chilmark beaches, Menemsha, Squibnocket and Lucy Vincent Beach are included. Volunteers will be at each beach to welcome all volunteers and offer bags and gloves to all for a two hour work session, from 10 a.m. to noon. There will be free raffle tickets and Flatbread pizza (as long as it lasts) for volunteers at the Tisbury Wharf Co. after the cleanup.

The Speakeasy Series continues in West Tisbury. It is a series of author talks sponsored by the State Road Restaurant and the West Tisbury Library Foundation Inc. The monies raised go toward the planned library expansion in West Tisbury. John Hough Jr. will speak on April 17 at 5:30 p.m. at the State Road Restaurant in North Tisbury (as we used to call that part of town). John is the author of Seen The Glory, a novel of the Battle of Gettysburg. Please call Carol Brush at 508-693-3489 for ticket information.

Tomorrow, April 7, will be the opportunity to throw away those electronic devises that don’t work any more. Martha’s Vineyard Community Services building on the Edgartown Road across from the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School is the drop-off site from 9 a.m. to noon. The small fees charged will go to benefit the many good works of the Community Services.

We send get well wishes to Norman Freed, who is presently in Boston recovering from surgery. We hear he is doing well and we look forward to seeing him back in Chilmark and out and about soon.

Cheers to all who celebrate the religious holidays coming up this weekend. We hope family and food abound and the sun shines on us all!
