The weather has us all in a spring cleaning mood, and I shall alert you to our annual Earth Day beach cleanups when they come due. But you can start tomorrow with Electronics Disposal Day at our Martha’s Vineyard Community Services, 111 Edgartown Road. Items from cell phones to refrigerators to microwaves will be taken off your hands for a sliding fee between $1 and $35. This helps you clean your basement of broken machines and raises money for the community services. Hmm. I’m thinking of a dehumidifier I picked up “absolutely free” from the bargain box last year that never did work. I’ll see you there.

The American Legion has its Past and Present Presidents dinner next Wednesday, refreshments at 5:30 p.m. at the post, dinner at 6 p.m., meeting at 7 p.m. A special thank you goes out to Jason Balboni for cleaning the ice machine. Bingo remains the game to play on Monday nights at our Post 257. Taps for Sam Syndyer, who served in the U.S. Army.

There is an award-winning documentary to be shown at the Chilmark Community Center tomorrow night, The Economics of Happiness, sponsored by Slow Food of Martha’s Vineyard. A soup supper is offered, dinner and the movie cost $10; if you wish to see the film only, admission is $5. Dinner begins at 6 p.m., the film screens at 7 p.m., and a discussion follows at 8 p.m., with the film’s creator, Helena Norberg-Hodge. Sounds like a perfect evening out, especially for all you seasonals here for the holiday weekend.

Marilyn Miller is featured in Art in the Stacks at our library for this month. Come check out her Island-themed photography. Storytime continues for kids on Tuesdays, 10 a.m., for infants to two-year-olds, 11 a.m. for three to fives. Again, we will be having a special guest just before Earth Day. Tween Gaming, eight-year to elevens, continues on Wednesdays from 3 to 5 p.m., Teen Gaming is Fridays from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. Our library never slows down and this is great news for those of us who won’t be getting away for vacation on spring break.

Happy Passover and Happy Easter to all. I slowed the car in the dark last night when I saw something scurry across the road, thinking it was a cat but, no, it was Peter Cottontail himself and he had safe passage and should be able to make his appointed rounds.

I am so sorry for all the tragedies last week, and I ask you to pray with me for those involved: Cynthia in West Tisbury, the three women in the car accident in Aquinnah, the students and staff shot at that college in California, and my cousin, Teddy Spiconardi, who was mugged and shot at a shopping mall in New York. He is alive but critical. He was mugged by three men for his watch, wallet, cell phone and sneakers, all of which he handed over. Did they have to shoot him, too? I really don’t know where all this is going, but we definitely need to pray and think about this stuff and how to end the violence.

The birthday bandwagon pulls along Kelsey Forend-Healy, Ken Vanderlaske, Nancy Shemeth, and Kathryn Lang today. Tomorrow is claimed by Muriel Gerhard. April 8 belongs to Carol Koury and Simon Goldberg. April 9 is a party for Laura Daly, Nick Weyl, and April Cimeno. April 10 belongs to Jason Murphy. April 11 is for Zachary Atumick, Suzanne Cory-Warren, and Jennifer Colligan. And on April 12 Siobhan Francis, Elmer Silva, and Danielle Ewart take the cake. Many happy returns.
