The warm weather has returned again this week and has brought families to their summer residences for brief stays to enjoy the warmth and sunshine. Anne Vanderhoop Madison and her family are getting busy preparing to open the Aquinnah Shop; Berta Welch and her sister, Carla Cuch, have opened Stony Creek Gifts for the season; Marshall Lee and Martha Vanderhoop are opening their HatMarChar Shop soon. There are many visitors each day to the cliffs.
Martha’s Vineyard Center for Living presents the next in a series of Cultural Luncheons on Saturday, April 21 from noon to 2 p.m. at The Grill on Main in Edgartown. Learn about the culture and influence of the Martha’s Vineyard Camp Grounds and Camp Meeting Association. Tickets are $25 and may be reserved by calling MVC4L Director Leslie Clapp at 508-939-9440.
Storytime and crafts will be a fun time at the Aquinnah Public Library on Thursday, April 26 from 3:30 to 4 p.m. with Barbara Lampson. The egg hunt on Saturday was popular and well-attended. Seeds were planted by the children and the fruits of their labor will be evident in a few weeks.
The Orange Peel Bakery will be open on Saturday for pizza from noon to 2 p.m. Stop by, please bring your own toppings to share and have a wonderful time.
Other new homes nearing completion in Aquinnah include Amera Ignacio’s on Church street and the Niessen home and Cammann home both on Moshup Trail.
Beetlebung Festival of the Arts and Edibles will be held at the Chilmark Community Center on Saturday, April 14 at 6 p.m. Music will be provided by Lydia Fischer and Jason Nichols, Chef Chris Fischer will astound one and all with his gastronomic delights, Todd Christy will be sharing his delightful coffees from his Chilmark Coffee Company, and Susan Johnson will present some of her plein air artwork. Enjoy dinner, music and art on Saturday evening.
Sincerest condolences to the family and friends of Jane Cottle Gale Baker, who passed away this week in Tisbury. Jane was a longtime family friend and her children, Lynne, Leigh, Richard and Raymond, all attended school with many of us.
Three-month-old Charlotte Bologna returned recently from a two week visit to Florida. She was accompanied by her parents Nicholas and Susan. For now, she is enjoying the sunshine on her carriage trips around Aquinnah Circle.
Condolences to George Fisher in the loss of his mother Mildred Fisher, who passed away this week. Mildred was always helpful on our visits to the library while I once resided in Oak Bluffs.
Welcome to Bill and Joan Kistner, who will arrive on Wednesday for a visit with our grandson, Noah, and his parents, Paul and Theresa. We will look forward to many family gatherings while they are here.
Sincerest condolences to the family and friends of Herbert Lee, who passed away on April 4 in Palm Beach, Fla. After a long and successful career, he enjoyed his retirement and was very proud of his work with the Fellowship of Christians and Jews where, at the age of 97, he was recently honored as Man of the Year. He is survived by his children, Richard Lee of Aquinnah, Thomas Lee and Jonathan Lee and their families. Rick had recently returned home after visiting with his father over the winter. Services were held in Boston on Monday.
Marshall Lee, his wife, Martha Vanderhoop, and their son. Sam (a senior at Yale), were recently at Yale University to watch Jo Jo race with his Columbia University cycling team. They all enjoyed a family visit together on the Yale campus.
Congratulations to Frank and Melanie Perez on the birth of their son, Diego Francisco David Perez, on March 22 at Massachusetts General Hospital. Diego was welcomed home by his brothers, Dominic and Vincent, and grandparents, David and Alicia Giles, and many cousins.
Jenna Petersiel arrived over the weekend after spending a recent vacation on the west coast. She has arrived to not only open the stone house for the summer but to also open the Chilmark Tavern with Jenna at the helm for this her third season.
Arlen Roth has a new kickstarter.com project to promote and raise funds for his next album, the Slide Guitars Summit, featuring duets with some of his favorite slide guitar players. Arlen notes, “It is a really exciting project and one that has never been done before.” Stay tuned! In the meantime, Arlen will be on the Vineyard for the summer.
All the best to Lexie Roth, who will release her second, self-titled album on Saturday, April 14 from 8 to 9 p.m. at the Rockwood Music Hall on the lower east side of Manhattan at 196 Allen Street. Lexie and her father, Arlen, have been performing all winter in Manhattan.
All the best to Kate Taylor, who will be performing at Feinstein’s at 540 Park Avenue in Manhattan on April 30 from 8 to 10 p.m. Tickets are $25 to $40 for the evening performance.
Durwood and Jamie Vanderhoop returned home on Sunday evening after spending the weekend with the Spears family and friends in Rhode Island.
Saskia Vanderhoop and her daughter, Nanauwe, returned recently after spending three weeks with family in Holland. While they were away, David continued teaching salsa lessons, which they have been helping many Vineyarders learn the steps.
Condolences to the family and friends of Mike Wallace, who graced our living rooms for decades on Sunday evenings with his honesty and thoughtfulness. He is now with his great friends Art Buchwald and Bill Styron and they are once again having a grand time. It was a pleasure to see him so often on the Vineyard over the years, to share moments of laughter, to share many photographs, and to especially be a part of the Zeb Tilton documentary with him. He will be missed by many around the world.
Would the person who removed the pine armoire and wampum jewelry from the home on Aquinnah Circle over the weekend please return it — no questions asked.

A very special Happy 96th birthday wish to Francis “Sandy” Fisher as he celebrates his special day on Saturday, April 14. He is a lifelong Vineyard native with ancestry all the way back to the 1600s — and not only the Fisher family of Edgartown, but also the Lambert and West families of up-Island. On his special day, his family and friends across the Vineyard wish him a very happy birthday.

A very special happy birthday wish to Eleanor Marie Francis Hebert, who will observe a major milestone on April 19 and no matter how often we discuss the issue, I am still three and a half weeks older than she.
