The Martha’s Vineyard Adult Learning Program (MVALP) celebrated completion of its 13th year of teaching English to adult immigrants at the High School Performing Arts Center on April 5. Attending the certificate and awards ceremony were Jim Weiss, superintendent of schools, Janet Sylvia, the superintendent’s financial administrative assistant, Jeanne Burke, the MVALP director, teachers and other educators, community partners, students and numerous family members, friends and supporters of the program.

The Adult Learning Program offers classes in English to speakers of other languages at six levels, from beginner through advanced English. It is supported by a grant from Adult and Community Learning Services at the Massachusetts Department of Education, and by donations from the following local businesses: Ocean View Restaurant, Offshore Ale, Little House Café, Linda Jean’s Restaurant, The Wharf, Dock Street Coffee Shop, Mansion House Hotel, Reliable Market, Lattanzi’s Restaurant and The Ashley Inn.

This year’s student body was comprised of people from 11 different countries, who now call Martha’s Vineyard their home. For more information about classes, visit the Adult Learning Program Web site at mvalp.com
