Edgartown selectmen took disciplinary action this week against a resident whose dog attacked another dog.

At a public hearing Monday, selectmen learned that on March 14 an English bulldog mix named Rocket, belonging to Barry Nevin, attacked a dog that belongs to Helene Owens. The hearing was attended by town animal control officer Barbara Prada and the two dog owners.

The attack left Ms. Owens’s dog Charlie with puncture wounds on his neck. “It was a horrific event and traumatic for me and Charlie,” Ms. Owens told the selectmen. “Rocket tried to kill my dog and that’s the very definition of vicious.”

Ms. Nevin responded that her dog is big but not vicious.

Ms. Owens requested that Ms. Nevin pay for the veterinary bills.

In the end, the selectmen voted to place a permanent restraining order on Rocket, which means he must be on a leash at all times. He must also wear a harness and be attached to a cable or a chain when outside. The selectmen made no determination on the veterinary bills.
