Change is on the way for the Island’s music scene, as the Edgartown board of selectmen approved an alcohol license transfer from Nectar’s nightclub to Flatbread Pizza Company on Monday.
Jay Gould, the president of Flatbread, first appeared before the selectmen last week to request the license transfer. For two years the companies have been partners, with Flatbread providing pizza during the day and Nectar’s staging live shows at night. Mr. Gould told the selectmen that pending approval of the license transfer, the popular wood-fired pizza restaurant planned to buy out Nectar’s interest in the company, with the intention of continuing the operation, though somewhat differently than it has for the last few years.
Mr. Gould said that he plans to continue the long tradition of music at the venue.
Last week, selectmen postponed a decision on the matter after questions surfaced about the regular hours of operation at the restaurant. This week, Gould’s lawyer, Howard Miller, said the restaurant plans to close at 1 a.m.
The selectmen unanimously approved the license transfer.
In other business, the board approved police chief Antone Bettencourt’s proposal to extend restaurant hours this summer, allowing Edgartown establishments to remain open one half hour later, until 1:30 a.m. July through Labor Day. Last call would remain at 12:30 a.m., he said, but the later hours would allow for extra time for patrons to trickle out of the establishments.
“I’ll revisit it in the fall,” Mr. Bettencourt said. “If it doesn’t work we’ll talk again.”
The selectmen also approved the chief’s proposal to extend restaurant closing hours during the Fourth of July holiday week to 2 a.m., with a 1:15 a.m. last call.
The extended hours from Wednesday, July 4 through Saturday, July 7 would be good for town businesses, he said, and would reduce noise complaints in neighborhoods.
“We’re going to be busy those nights anyway, I’d rather have it contained downtown,” he said.
