Who can believe that after a month of heat outside that we had to turn the heat on again May 1? We are getting the much-needed rain the plants and ground need, but I think we can do without the cold air and wind. But on a light note, when the sun comes out the trees and plants are going to burst into their beauty.

Happy birthday to all who celebrated their day this past week. Big balloons go out to Matthew Ribeiro, who celebrated his day April 28; Ella Blodgett, April 29; Grant Pertile and Sarah Pertile, May 1; Paige Anderson, May 3, and to Tayla BenDavid, who celebrates her day today, May 5.

Special birthday wishes go out to our Chief of Police Tony Bettencourt, who celebrated his day May 1.

Ray and Lorraine St. Pierre just returned from a 10-day singing tour in Italy with the Federated Church choir. There were 47 people in the Vineyard group that included music director Peter Boak and organist Garrett Brown. Although it rained every day, they managed to enjoy the trip, the company of the group, and be awed by the architecture of the old cities.

They visited Venice, Verona, Padua, Ferrara, Florence, Lucca and Milan, with concerts at some of the region’s most magnificent, centuries-old churches. The churches left them in awe, they said. To think that they walked in the same footsteps of saints and world renowned artists. There was so much art to look at, from the ceilings to the floor, they sometimes found it hard to concentrate on the music.

Venice with its bridges and canals was a sight to see, and the gondolas even in the rain were a delight. The Venetian glass factory was spectacular and out of the ordinary. The amphitheater in Verona gave Lorraine chills to think of what went on there centuries ago, and Michelangelo’s David looked so lifelike it seemed like he was ready to walk off the pedestal. The narrow, cobblestone streets, and massive amounts of people going this way and that was an adventure in itself. Lorraine said she could go on and on, but it was a trip they will remember for a lifetime.

Lee and Cheryl Welch have returned after a winter aboard his new boat, The Livewire. The Welches motored down the East Coast, stopping in many ports until they got to Florida, then Abaco Island in the Bahamas. Their favorite place was in Hopetown in Elbow Carly. Sounds like they had a great time and I am sure they met some very nice people along the way. They said they were very happy with the performance of The Livewire, which was built just last year.

The whole Donaroma family is now home. Jeffery returned to the Island in April, and this past week Janice and Mike returned from their winter in St. John. I have not seen Janice yet, but I am sure we are going to see some great underwater pictures from her snorkeling adventures, which is her favorite pastime while there.

Have a great week and keep the home candles burning.
