Please Adopt Us

A very happy May to all the loyal readers of this column. As we begin our fourth year of operation, we would like to thank all who have adopted a dog, cat, kitten, bunny or guinea pig that you read about here, and also to those who have been so generous with donations of money, cleaning supplies, blankets, toys, food and just everything else that the Animal Shelter of Martha’s Vineyard needs to keep us going. We appreciate your kindness so much.

Our beautiful kitty named Lily who stole the hearts of everyone who walked through the door of the shelter has been adopted, and we’re so happy about that. Lily leaves behind some beautiful older cats who are also looking for homes. They are: Barley, a formerly shy tortoiseshell and white who has the sweetest face you have ever seen; Butter and Chloe, two tortoiseshells who look very much alike except that Butter has a white streak on her face; Ceilia, our resident greeter who, like Lily, loves to greet people at the door and sit with them; Deacon, a ginger tiger and just about the nicest cat you could ever want; Panchie, whose loving owner just died, and is still shy but ready to come out of his shell, only two years old, gray and white.

In addition to the cats, the shelter has just taken in the sweetest bunny named Pinkie, whose owner had to move and the landlord in the new place would not allow pets. He is litter box trained and looks like a wild bunny, all brown with long ears that stand up straight. He loves people too. We also have two darling guinea pigs named Hamlet and Ophelia.

Our wish list of tools and building supplies is available at the Edgartown Hardware Store. The store will deliver to the shelter anything purchased. The items on the list are badly needed to keep our building in good repair; anything you buy is tax deductible.

Shelter hours are Wednesdays 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Thursdays and Fridays 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and Saturdays 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The shelter is closed Sunday through Tuesday. The telephone number is 508-627-8662.

Contributions are always gratefully accepted; we are funded solely by donations. The Susie Fund was established to pay the medical expenses of animals at the shelter who need medical care. Please make checks out to The Animal Shelter of Martha’s Vineyard; the mailing address is P.O. Box 1829, Edgartown MA 02539.
