The April showers obviously held off until the month of May. Everything is awakening with the abundance of blossoms. Lilacs are three weeks ahead of schedule, the shad and beach plums are now in bloom. The Aquinnah Shop has officially opened for breakfast and lunch.

Aquinnah Library will be making traditional May baskets with paper flowers on Saturday, May 12, to celebrate Mother’s Day. Stop by and enjoy the day with Cathy Thompson, Rosa Parker, Barbara Lampson and Penny Huff and share your Mother’s Day stories while making your basket.

In honor of Mother’s Day, the Gay Head Lighthouse will be open from 1 to 3 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets are $5 per person. Mother’s and children under the age of 12 will be admitted free for the day. For further information, please call the Vineyard Museum at 508-627-4441.

Joan LeLacheur has a wampum and mosaic tile show at the Chilmark Library. The show opened on May 5 and will run through May 16 during library hours.

Martha’s Vineyard Youth Task Force will present Dr. Martha Straus on Friday evening, May 18, at 6:45 p.m. at the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School cafeteria. Dr. Straus will return for her third presentation on the Vineyard to discuss parenting techniques. She is the author of four books and will reflect on some of her vital work.

Aquinnah artist and photographer Lauri Bradway will present her recent works, Island Perspectives, at the Chilmark Library from May 19 through June 8 during library hours. Lauri will have an opening reception on Saturday, May 19, from 3 to 5 p.m. at the library.

The All-Island Elementary Spring String Concert was held on May 3 at the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School Performing Arts Center under the direction of Nancy Jephcote. Aquinnah students performing included Eleanor and Genevieve Hyland, Menasha Leport, Olive and Violet MacPhail, and Fin and Yossi Monahan. It was reportedly a great concert.

Thank you to Bonnie Chalifoux, Human Services Director for Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head (Aquinnah) and her staff Andrea McGee, Karen Dowd and Christy Moreis for providing the workshop over the weekend on Positive Indian Parenting—Honoring our Children by Honoring our Traditions, presented by Nadja Jones, a member of the Comanche and Onandaga tribes. Nadja is on the staff of the National Indian Child Welfare Association and has conducted workshops in Aquinnah in the past. The workshop was held at the Mansion House, where we enjoyed the gastronomic delights of Chef Patrick during breakfast and luncheons. The training was enjoyed by all who attended.

Sincerest condolences to the family and friends of Joan Baptiste, who passed away at Martha’s Vineyard Hospital this past week. Services were held for Joan on Saturday. She was a bright spot in the day for all who knew her and always shared her smile and laughter with everyone.

Mallory Butler returned home this week after spending the past two weeks in Aspen, Colorado with her five-year-old granddaughter Maeve and parents Kevin Sheehan and Jeffie Butler. Mallory flew home in time for our duties as members of the Board of Registrars for the annual town election and a not-to-be-missed time of interesting facts.

Welcome home to Joe and Faith Corbo, who returned after spending the winter across the country, visiting with their children along the way.

Congratulations to Lydia Fischer, daughter of Albert and Linda Fischer, as she graduates from Berklee School of Music with a degree in Music Composition.

Gary and Lisa Foster were recently at their Aquinnah home. Gary has spent most of the winter in New Zealand producing his latest film. We will look forward to their return for the summer season.

Betty Joslow, our top vote getter in the annual election, has returned to her position as a library trustee. Betty, who also serves as a constable among many of her duties in Aquinnah, has recently enjoyed a wonderful three-day visit from her three daughters, Laurie, Nancy and Wendy.

Get well wishes to Joan Kistner, who underwent surgery at South Shore Hospital on Thursday. We will look forward to her arrival home this afternoon and especially to enjoy more adventures with our Grandson Noah.

Olive and Violet MacPhail and their parents, Shawn and Alexandra, and their uncle Isaac and his wife Noli and little Emmett, hosted the third annual block party on Saturday. It was a day of celebration in honor of Alexandra’s birthday, Cinco de Mayo, Mother’s Day, and especially a visit from their uncle Eddie of Bourne. A grand time was had by all.

Captain Hugh Taylor and his wife Jeanne returned home over the weekend after spending the winter on their Caribbean island. They are preparing to open their Outermost Inn for the 24th season.

Captain Brian F. Vanderhoop returned home on Monday night after spending the past two weeks in Germany visiting with Elaine’s family and friends. Elaine will remain in Germany for a few more weeks before returning to her busy summer schedule at Beachcomber’s Realty.

May 17 will be a day of celebration for Kyle Killebrew, Erin Corbo, Tom Seeman, and Aquinnah Witham. Grace Reeves will celebrate a major milestone on May 18 and shares the day with Genie O’Donnell, Mark Wheaton, Malcolm Smith, and Faith Corbo will also be celebrating a major milestone.
