Things have definitely popped in town. The trees are all donning their new leaves, the grass is getting greener and the flowers are starting to show their greens. I know some people are tired of the rain already but we sure needed it and when the sun comes out it will get greener.

Happy birthday to all who celebrated their day this past week. Big balloons go out to Olivia Green-Lingren and Ian Shea who celebrated their day May 9, and to Gabriel Edmunds who celebrated his day today, May 11.

Special wishes go out to Scott Morgan who celebrated a milestone birthday on May 5.

Happy anniversary wishes go to Pam Dolby and her husband Michael who celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary on May 3. Their children Chris and his wife Liza Dolby, daughter Shannon, and her husband Andy Smith, and daughter Linley Dolby and her husband Dave all were together to celebrate the event. Congratulations to you both and here is to many more years together.

The Martha’s Vineyard Cancer Support Group is holding its annual fundraiser An Evening Under the Stars, on May 17 from 6 to 9 p.m. at Lattanzi’s. Music will be provided by Mike Benjamin. A wide selection of hot and cold hors d’oeuvres, appetizers, a raw bar, desserts, soft drinks, wine and beer and a cash bar will be available to guests.

Door prizes will consist of gift certificates from Island restaurants and businesses. The Cancer Support Group is most appreciative of all the vendors who have donated to our cause. All money that is raised stays here on the Island to help cancer patients and their families who need temporary and emergency help during a difficult time. Last year we were able to give out $49,000 to Island cancer patients. Our motto is “No one with cancer needs to be alone.”

Tom Dresser’s new book is now available at several venues, from the Martha’s Vineyard Museum in Edgartown to Hatmarcha Gifts at the Aquinnah Cliffs to Bunch of Grapes in Vineyard Haven. Disaster Off Martha’s Vineyard recounts the harrowing tale of the shipwreck of the steamship City of Columbus off Gay Head on a frigid January night in 1884. The only survivors were rescued by Wampanoags who braved brisk seas to save a few souls.

Tom will present talks in the upcoming weeks, including the Chilmark Library at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 16; the Oak Bluffs Library at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday May 17; and the Oak Bluffs Senior Center at 10 a.m. on Friday, May 18. On Tuesday, May 29, he will speak at the Aquinnah Library at 5 p.m. and the Vineyard Haven Library at 7 p.m.

Have a great week and keep the home candles burning.
