Please Adopt Us

The Animal Shelter of Martha’s Vineyard has another dog mystery which we hope someone reading this column can help solve. A beautiful little dog was picked up on Waldron’s Bottom Road off Long Point Road in West Tisbury by West Tisbury animal control officer Joan Jenkinson. The dog was taken to the town pound facility at Animal Health Care Associates where he was kept for the required 11 days, and after no one claimed him, he was brought to the shelter to be put up for adoption. The little buff and white dog looks like a Shih Tzu or a Lhasa Apso. He weighs 17 pounds and was wearing a black harness when he was found. He has captured the hearts of everyone at the shelter. If anyone knows anything about this adorable stray, please contact Lisa at the shelter. We cannot believe he doesn’t have a frantic owner who is looking for him, but since no one has claimed him he will be put up for adoption.

The shelter also has two exceptionally loving and friendly Chihuahuas available for adoption: a male named Oscar , who is four years old and brown; and a female named Chauncy, who is five and is white with brown markings. Both are up to date in their shots and have been spayed and neutered.

The cat population at the shelter remains the same; we have six beautiful, healthy older cats who need to find loving homes soon. They are: Barley, a tortoiseshell and white female who is quickly overcoming her shyness; Butter and Chloe, two beautiful young tortoiseshell cats; Ceilia, our shelter mascot who greets everyone who comes to the shelter; Deacon, a handsome, young male orange tiger who is really a love; and Panchie, who is fairly new to the shelter and still a bit shy, a young gray and white cat whose owner recently died.

Our brick memorial sidewalk is filling up quickly, but we still need some more bricks to make it complete. If you would like to memorialize a person or a beloved animal, the cost is $100 for the first brick and less for additional bricks . Call us for details or come have a look at the sidewalk — it is quite beautiful.

Shelter hours are Wednesdays 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Thursdays and Fridays 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and Saturdays 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The shelter is closed Sunday through Tuesday. The telephone number is 508-627-8662.

Volunteers are needed and contributions are always gratefully accepted; we are funded solely by donations. The Susie Fund was established to pay the medical expenses of animals at the shelter who need medical care.
