This is not your parent’s prom.

There are the limo buses that will hit Island streets Saturday night, the online shopping to find the perfect dress (a bonus for Island-bound Vineyard teens), and the inevitable Facebook pictures of the big night.

No matter the differences, though, Vineyard high schoolers will follow in their forebears’ footsteps this Saturday for a teenage rite of passage, the prom.

This year, the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School junior prom will be held at the Edgartown Yacht Club from 6 to 10 p.m.

Sam Oslyn, the head of the prom committee, said this year’s theme is Starry Night, based on the painting by Vincent Van Gogh. The Yacht Club will be decorated with colors and decorations inspired by the painting.

“It’s going to look great,” Mr. Oslyn said. “We’re all really excited.”

Mr. Oslyn said he and others will be traveling to and from prom on large limo buses, which will serve as post-prom party venues, complete with stereo systems, food, and a mini-dance floor.

Edgartown police chief Antone Bettencourt said the police department is prepared for the crowd and the corresponding prom traffic coming to downtown Edgartown. Some officers will be assigned to the prom itself, and police have designated parking for the buses.

Beyond traffic concerns because of the amount of people coming to the Yacht Club, “we don’t expect any issues,” he said.

“Just be responsible, is all we’re asking the students and the parents,” he said.
