Part of the Edgartown-West Tisbury road was blocked from traffic Friday afternoon after a car collided with a utility pole, police said.

Around 1 p.m. Friday, a vehicle driven by Carolyn Spengler, 72, of West Tisbury, collided with a utility pole on Edgartown road just past Deep Bottom road, West Tisbury police Corporal Garrison Vieira said. Ms. Spengler was taken to Martha’s Vineyard Hospital with minor injuries.

The collision caused the utility pole to break, he said, and NStar shut off power to the area. Police closed both lanes of traffic because the wires, though intact, were hanging over the road and posed a safety risk.

Ms. Spengler was traveling up-Island in a red 2007 Honda CR-V when she veered to the right and hit the pole, Mr. Vieira said.

The West Tisbury police, the West Tisbury fire department, and the Tri-Town EMS were called to the scene, and state police, Edgartown police, and Chilmark police also responded to assist.

Traffic was redirected down Deep Bottom road, and the one lane was reopened just after 5 p.m., Mr. Vieira said.

The cause of the accident is under investigation.
