The Vineyard Independence Partnership (VIP) presented its first-ever Access Appreciation award to the Steamship Authority Wednesday afternoon in recognition of the recent improvements the SSA has made to its passenger ramp at the Vineyard Haven terminal. The ramp, installed earlier in the year, was designed to offer greater accessibility to passengers with physical disabilities, and features more gradual sloping and switchbacks.

SSA station manager Bridget Tobin accepted the award, given by VIP co-presidents Steve Soriano and Allison Burger.

“This is the best award I’ve ever received,” Mrs. Tobin said “The one that makes a difference . . . we’re going to hang this plaque with a lot of pride.”

“Bridget, we hope you never retire,” Mr. Soriano joked to Mrs. Tobin.

The Vineyard Independence Partnership was founded in 1983 as the Martha’s Vineyard Special Parents Association, but changed their name in 2007 as membership broadened to include more of the community.
