Chilmark joins the rest of the Island in welcoming the vacationers who will begin our busy season with their Memorial Day visits and celebrations. There are many entertainments planned and if the sun stays with us, we will all celebrate!

Chilmark was given a preview look at the Lynx, the replica of the 1812 privateer that paid a five-day visit to the Vineyard Haven harbor. She was anchored off our shores the night before going down-Island, and a pretty sight she was.

We send best wishes to Phyllis Conway who had an unfortunate fall in her home last week. She is convalescing at home and we hope to see her out and about soon.

The Chilmark Community Church will hold their annual Plant and Yard sale on the church grounds on Saturday, May 26, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The word is out that there will be lots to choose from in the way of plants and flea market treasures.

We send condolences to the family and friends of Eleanor Wall Jensen who died on April 9. She was a long time visitor to Chilmark and had had a Chilmark home since 1957. She was able to visit Martha’s Vineyard for 80 summers. Her many friends will miss her here. She will rest at Abel’s Hill and the family will have a memorial service for her this summer at the West Tisbury Congregational Church.

John Jacobs is in from Littleton, Colo. for an extended visit to his Menemsha home.

Bob and Emma Shalhope have arrived from Norman, Okla. and are busy opening their home on D.H.’s Hill.

The Tavern Restaurant next door to the Chilmark Store opened on Wednesday and will have their menu and hours posted on their door.

The Menemsha Market is now open with an interesting assortment of items of interest to all. Debby Packer will be happy to show you around.

Tom Langman is here from Washington, D.C. and will soon be bass fishing, weather permitting.

Welcome back to Charles and Marjorie Phillips who arrived this week at their Larsen Lane home. They winter in Lexington, Va.

Congratulations to Susan and Brigida Larsen who completed the annual Avon Walk for Cancer in Boston last weekend. Sue is happy to report that she was able to raise her $10,000 goal, and she sends heartfelt thanks to all her supporters who helped her do that. Her daughter, Brigida was part of the youth group that helped the walkers along the way. She was invited to speak at the beginning of the walk and did so with enthusiasm and skill. We are all proud of our neighbors, Sue and Brigida. Sue has already committed herself to next year’s walk and we will be happy to support her efforts in 2013.

The Capt. Flanders House will be the site of the wedding this week of Abigail Solomon and Jason Teuscher. Abigail is the daughter of Peter Solomon and Linda Shapiro. Both families will celebrate the festive occasion with many Chilmark-centered events. We send cheers to all!

Bill and Emily Meegan are happy to tell us that their son, Jake, will graduate from the Martha’s Vineyard Public Charter School this spring and will attend the University of Massachusetts this fall. Congratulations from us all!

Forrest Speck and his wife, Ann Verret, of Amesbury, are in town for their annual early summer vacation.

There were big doings at the Bite on Wednesday last when the Travel Channel spent two hours taping the goings-on at that popular food place. We look forward to seeing them on the TV show but it won’t be shown until September.

Olivia Larsen has joined the staff at the Chilmark Library for the summer months. She is the daughter of John and Susan Larsen of North Road.

The Aquinnah Library will host Tom Dresser on May 29 from 5 to 6 p.m. when he will speak about his new book, Disaster off Martha’s Vineyard: The Wreck of the City of Columbus. The speaker series is held at the Old Town Hall in Aquinnah and open to all.

Ed Greenebaum and Joan Caulton are at the Greenebaum house in Menemsha having come from Bloomington, Ind. Jeanne Speakman joined them for a brief visit and enjoyed catching up with her nephew, Erich Greenebaum, who will accompany her back to Indiana.

Terry and Kathy Meinelt came from Topsfield for a weekend visit to their home on Wade’s Cove.

Cheers to you all for a happy Memorial Day weekend and, if you wish to share any of the details, please e-mail me with the news!
