The weather has been a bit gloomy, but the flowers love the rain and the dirt roads are not as dusty. I can’t say that it has helped the pollen as I know many people who are having a terrible time.

Happy birthday to all who celebrated their day this past week. Big balloons go out to Madison Palmer, who celebrated her day May 19; Amelia Craig and Lukas Fenske, May 20; Heather Kirwin, May 21; Espen Desquenne, May 23, and to Ryan Murray, May 25.

Special birthday wishes to Kristen Ivory, who will celebrate her day May 27.

The Martha’s Vineyard Chamber Music Society will join thousands of musicians and hundreds of concert presenters across the country this May in celebrating National Chamber Music Month. The chamber society is presenting music by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Joaquin Turina and Richard Strauss at its spring concert on Saturday, May 26. The concert is part of a nationwide initiative to raise awareness of the many styles of small ensemble music performed and presented today.

Sharan Leventhal (violin), Lila Brown (viola), Jonathan Miller (cello) and Delores Stevens (piano) will play Piano Quartets by Mozart, Turina and Strauss. The performance starts at 7:30 p.m. at the Old Whaling Church. Tickets are $20 for adults, and will be sold at the door. Students are admitted free.

Sign up for a chamber music summer concert series subscription before May 31 and you can save money with an early bird discount. Our Island Club subscribers can get an additional 10 per cent off. Subscriptions can be purchased at the spring concert.

Have you gone by the State Beach in the early evening and seen people lining the shore? They are squidding. People have been catching them right from the shore and taking them home for bait. Some are also cleaning them to eat. We are doing both. We had baked stuffed calamari with sausage, made by Ernie, my boss. It was amazing. Now we are trying to think of other things we can stuff them with. The not so desirable parts are in the freezer for bait.

There was another great reason for being on the beach, and that was to watch the fabulous sunset over Himmey Crowell’s point. The clouds were also swirling in the sky and it was a picture perfect night. We had a lot of fun and saw nature at its best.

I could not close this column without mentioning the passing of Stelle Burnham. Stelle was small in stature but was a giant in kindness. She was a people person and also adored her four-legged friends. I first met Stelle at Featherstone farm when it was a horse farm and Stelle came for riding lessons with the other ladies of her age. She rode the horses at the farm, but was a little nervous of my horse, Tomahawk. Tommy had a reputation of bucking people off when he was done for the day and Stelle witnessed a few of these occasions, so she made a pact with Thomas, as she called him, that if she ever rode him and he did not buck her off, she would bring him carrots every time she came to ride. The pact worked and they were great friends. She was a wonderful person and I am glad I knew her. Her love and compassion for people and animals was something she did effortlessly. She dedicated the end of her life to making sure our men and women in the military received supplies that they needed. She worked with Joanne Murphy helping her to get the things to be shipped on time. Our sympathy goes out to her family. Stelle will be missed.

I hope you have a wonderful Memorial Day weekend. Please take some time to think of the men and women who gave up their tomorrows so we could have ours.

Have a great week and keep the home candles burning.
