A Boston man was arraigned in Edgartown district court Tuesday morning on several rape charges after allegedly assaulting an Oak Bluffs woman in Chilmark.

Bryant K. Brown, 33, of Boston was charged with eight counts, including assault to murder, assault to rape, three counts of aggravated rape, kidnapping and indecent assault and battery on someone older than 60 or disabled.

The victim was a 28-year-old woman who is disabled, assistant district attorney Laura Marshard said.

According to a Chilmark police statement, the alleged victim met Mr. Brown and his girlfriend, Latoya Gatlin, in Oak Bluffs Sunday evening and returned to their rental cottage at a Chilmark inn. The assault allegedly occurred at the inn after Ms. Gatlin “passed out,” the police said.

The alleged victim was held against her will, police said, and called the West Tisbury police at 5:30 a.m. Monday when she escaped from the cottage and was walking on North Road.

Chilmark, West Tisbury, Aquinnah and state police responded to the inn, the statement said, and waited until the couple left the cottage and were in their vehicle before making the arrest because of Mr. Brown’s criminal history.

In the 1990s, Mr. Brown was sentenced in Suffolk Superior Court to three to four years in state prison and two years of probation for assault to murder, Ms. Marshard said, and he was also convicted of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon in the same case.

Ms. Gatlin, 28, of Roslindale, was arraigned Tuesday in Edgartown district court on charges of defrauding an inn keeper of more than $100 and possession with intent to distribute a class D substance.

Police records in the case have been impounded by the district court judge.

Mr. Brown is being held on $300,000 bail, and a pretrial conference is scheduled for June 4.
