The weather was just absolutely ideal for the Memorial Day weekend, especially to lift the spirits of so many who arrived for the first signs of summer approaching. Many families arrived to open their Aquinnah summer homes, to spend beach time with friends, enjoy lunch and dinner out with those who were here to open their homes, tour the Lighthouse at Aquinnah Circle, enjoy the Memorial Day parade, or to just sit on the deck reading the latest book. Many Aquinnah families dined at Chilmark Tavern on Sunday evening and it was great to see everyone after the long winter.

Those arriving for their holiday weekend in Aquinnah included Max and Cheryl Batzer, Gary and Lisa Foster, Dr. Thomas Green, Judge James Hubert and his wife and Jody Queen, Ron and Cynthia Low, Dr. Richard Mulligan, Tom and Christine Murphy, and Paul and Genie O’Donnell.

Dinner at the Chilmark Tavern was simply superb and one of the most delectable meals out in a long time. Our dear neighbor Jenna Petersiel has certainly proven herself as a young restaurateur. Her mother, Louise Petersiel, returned to Swampscot on Sunday after arriving to assist Jenna with the season opening. I will look forward to my next adventure at the Tavern. Thank you, Jenna.

The Martha’s Vineyard Neighborhood Convention will meet for the final time before summer recess on Tuesday, June 5 at the Chilmark Community Church. Worship will be by the Reverend Arlene Bodge. The topic will be on The Yard and the amazing dance revues held virtually in the back yard of the Chilmark Community Church. Luncheon guests are invited to attend with worship at 10:45 a.m. Please remember to bring a brown bag lunch; dessert and beverages will be provided.

Congratulations to Clara Corjulo for her honor roll status at Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School. Clara, the daughter of Kathy Corjulo of Aquinnah and Daniel Corjulo of Connecticut, will be heading to Salve Regina College in September.

To add to my list of Aquinnah Minnesingers, I would be remiss if I did not mention Lydia Fischer, who recently graduated from the Berklee School of Music.

All the best to Kitty Hendricks, who has accepted the position of child care manager for her Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe. Kitty has been the education planning coordinator for the Aquinnah Tribe for the past six years. She was well-respected by the children she taught and by their parents who entrusted their care to Kitty during her cultural classes.

Bill and Joan Kistner returned to their home in New York on Thursday after spending the past six and a half weeks with our grandson, Noah James Manning, and his parents, Paul and Theresa. Many joyous family dinners, laughter and spending time with friends. We will look forward to their return soon to celebrate Noah’s sixth birthday.

All the best to David Madeiras as he retires from Phillips Hardware after 35 years and after serving as an Oak Bluffs police officer following his military service.

In the meantime, I will venture down-Island soon to see Scott Mullin at the Sidecar Café, which has finally opened for the season on Kennebec Avenue.

Michael Sellitti, son of Cheryl Vanderhoop and Michael Sellitti, has arrived from his junior year studies at High Point College in High Point, N.C. He is working at the Up-Island Auto for his sixth summer season.

It is always a pleasure to meet new Aquinnah residents and that was the case meeting Rusty and Judith Shunk on Tuesday evening during the Aquinnah Library talk presented by Tom Dresser. Rusty and Judith have previously been guest speakers for the library and it is anticipated they will offer their words of wisdom at a later date. In the meantime, we can thank them for their generosity in providing snacks at not only the library but also for the police department and the Aquinnah town hall.

Joe Spinelli and John McKinstry arrived over the weekend for their summer sojourn. Joe will be at the Grange each Friday with his magnificent collection of antique jewelry.

All the best to Beverly Landers Tucker, fellow MVRHS classmate and former co-worker at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital, who retired from the hospital after 46 years as a member of the dietary staff. Happy retirement, Bev!

Woody and Jamie Vanderhoop returned home on Monday after spending their weekend with friends at Brown University for a mini-reunion with 8,000 of their closest friends. They were also honored with a baby shower with many wonderful gifts from their friends while in Rhode Island.
