The weekend weather was a bit cool for this time of year, but it was bright and sunny with the temperature reaching almost 70 degrees. Lots of folks worked outdoors or held backyard barbeques. It is getting busier by the day and if you drove down to Vineyard Haven last weekend you experienced your first traffic snarl of the season. Thursday, June 14, is Flag Day. Linda Alley, also known as the jelly queen, reports that the Farmers’ Market will begin its 37th summer season tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. at the Grange Hall.

Ellen Weiss of Old County Road arrived to spend the summer at her home. She is a professor at Tulane University in New Orleans. She attended the special town meeting Tuesday night.

Don Klepper-Smith of Old County Road had as a houseguest Pete Gioia, another economist and spectacular gourmet chef. They had a great weekend clamming and fishing and landed a nice 36-inch striper off the Menemsha dock, which Pete cooked with his special fennel recipe. Don reports a great time was had by all.

Warren and Marilyn Hollingshead of Pond View Farm Road entertained 18 college classmates and their spouses for several days after attending his 55th college reunion. Visiting this week are their daughter Dana, her husband Todd Gill, their two children and Todd’s family from Cape Cod and California.

Malcolm and Judy Hall of Oklahoma City will be arriving at their Pond Road home for the summer early next week. Malcolm is ready to set out his hybrid okra plants in the freshly-tilled garden and expects a bumper crop this year.

Emily Gadd of Bozeman, Mont. and South Road, returned to her home last month for the season. She has been busy planting her gardens this past week even though she had a problem with deer. She reports she is planting some new types of vegetables this year to go along with her oceans of flowers. Welcome back!

Old friend Dee Caruso of Brentwood, Calif., died late last month. He became a frequent summer visitor when he married the former Sandra Maley some 47 years ago in the Congregational Church. He was a very witty guy, a professional writer for many famous comedians. He and his writing partner, Gerald Gardner, wrote material for Jack Benny, Jerry Lewis, Don Adams, Don Rickles, Robin Williams and Bill Cosby. They were the head writers for the original TV series, Get Smart, created by Mel Brooks and Buck Henry. He always had an interesting story to tell. Our sincere condolences to his wife Sandra.

Betsy Burmeister, recreation director over at Windemere, reports that Windemere is having its annual auction on Friday, June 15 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Agricultural Hall. There will be wine, desserts and light fare. They will have a live and silent auction as well as a raffle. Prizes include a sailing trip, a catered dinner for eight on the beach, golf lessons, fly fishing, paintings, massages, a week’s stay at a cottage in Maine, a plane ride over the Vineyard, handmade quilts and blankets and much more!

Author Tom Dresser reports that he’s on the final leg of his Islandwide book tour and will speak on Tuesday at the Howes House conversation group at 9:30 a.m. His book is Disaster off Martha’s Vineyard: The Sinking of the City of Columbus.

This is an opportunity to climb to the top of the Edgartown, East Chop and Gay Head lighthouses, to visit the West Chop Light, and the test of getting to the Cape Pogue Light, reachable only by an over-sand vehicle (advanced reservations required through the Trustees of Reservations). Tickets include admission to the museum, home of the 1854 original Fresnel lens from the Gay Head Light.

The park and recreation committee reports that beach stickers will be available starting next Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the tennis shed at the school near the courts on Old County Road. Weekday hours are 9 a.m. to noon and weekend hours are 4 to 7 p.m. The beach opens for the season on June 23.

Perhaps the most elaborate and certainly one of the most popular events in the history of the Agricultural Hall was held on June 15, 1920. The play Gifts of the Past, written and directed by Emma Whiting, was written so that most all of the people in town had a part in it. The show was enthusiastically received by an overflow audience in the hall. The play was a historical drama with 14 different scenes depicting highlights in the life of the town.
