The undefeated high school boys' tennis team picked up their 22nd win of the season Monday afternoon with a 4-1 victory over Weston, punching their ticket to the Division 3 state finals in the process.
Junior Justice Yennie, who kept his own unbeaten streak alive, picked up the first win of the day at third singles. The second doubles team of juniors Ryan Sawyer and Justin Smith dropped their match to put the score at 1-1, but first doubles duo Jackson McBride and Natty Schneider put the Vineyard back in the lead.
Sophomore Patrick McCarthy, playing at second singles, secured the team's win. Junior Kent Leonard came back from an 0-6 first set to notch a win of his own, going 6-4, 6-2 in the next two sets.
Weston has won the state title for the past two years.
"They're the defending champs, and it's pretty exciting," head coach Ned Fennessy said in a phone conversation with the Gazette.
The boys will play Nashoba, the winners of the Central section, in the state finals on Thursday in Shrewsbury at 3:30 p.m.
