Junior Maggie Riseborough traveled to the New England Track and Field Championship Meet on June 9 in Saco, Me., throwing a 35’4.75” in the shot put to place 15th of 36. Riseborough, whose personal best was a 37’1” throw in 2011, was ranked 17th in New England going into the meet. The winning throw was 44’7”, by Cherraine Davis of Southington, Conn.

Riseborough is the first Vineyard athlete to compete in New Englands since 1998, and is the first thrower to represent the school at the meet.

Five track and field boys competed in the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletics Association decathlon on June 6-7, with the three-man team of seniors Je’Vaughn Crooks, Peter Keaney and Rafael Maciel placing second in the state, behind Weymouth. The decathlon is an optional end-of-the-season event (“You have to be crazy enough to sign up for it,” coach Joe Schroeder said), featuring the 100 metre dash, 400 metre run, 110 metre high hurdles and 1,500 metre run on the track side and the javelin, discus, shot put, triple jump, high jump and long jump on the field side.

The girls’ team sent six athletes — Julia Neville, Sabrina Reppert, Katherine Dorr, Dana Jacobs, Willoe Maynard, and Mariah Campbell — to the heptathlon competition on June 5-6.
