We are celebrating the weather that cooperated with the Fourth of July. There was rain in the morning, and warm sunshine for the rest of the day. The parade was a success and so were the fireworks.

Happy birthday to all who celebrated day this week. Big balloons go out to Jessyca Hernandez and Aidan Smith, who celebrated their day June 30; Abner Oliveira, July 1; Charles Fenske, July 2; Jonathan Watson, July 5, and to Jonathan “J.J.” Polleys, who celebrates his day today, July 6.

Charlotte Simmons of Marlboro, along with three of her best friends, spent a week with Charlotte’s Va-voa, Allouise Morgan of Edgartown. The girls, Charlotte, Regan, Alisa and Claire, enjoyed all of the joys of a late June week on the Vineyard, swimming, bridge jumping, strolling Oak Bluffs, shopping in Vineyard Haven and Edgartown, eating out, buying T-shirts and all having a wonderful time.

Charlotte and her family headed out for a birthday celebration with her paternal grandmother, Ruth Simmons of Avon Lake, Ohio, before heading to Edgartown for the Fourth of July to watch great uncle Ted Morgan, once more, lead the parade.

On Thursday, July 12, 7:30 p.m., award-winning journalist and author Charlayne Hunter-Gault will read from her new book, To the Mountaintop: My Journey Through the Civil Rights Movement. The event will take place at Union Chapel in Oak Bluffs. All proceeds will benefit Island Elderly Housing (IEH) Inc.’s Quality of Life Programs. Human rights activist, journalist and poet Rose Styron will make a special introduction. Tickets for the event can be purchased at Alley’s General Store, Bunch of Grapes bookstore, and daRosa’s; or online at ticketsMV.com, $35 in advance, $40 at the door. Doors open at 6:45.

Their generous sponsors include Cronig’s Market, Martha’s Vineyard Savings Bank, Milhench Supply Co., ESS, Vineyard Propane, ABC Disposal, H.N. Hinckley Co., DeSorcy Co., daRosa’s, and Martha’s Vineyard Insurance Agency, Inc.

For more information please call Dorothy Young, IEH director, at 508-693-5880, extension 12.

The holiday was busy and many people had company. We have watched many of our neighbors entertaining. Our family, including my brother Frank and sister-in-law Linda, are here, and we have been enjoying their granddaughter and our great niece, Sabrina, who is on her first visit to the Island. Her parents are Doug and Lori Noble. Lori’s sister Lisa and brothers Dave and Rob Boulanger are here; the brothers marched in the parade with the Colonial Navy. Also visiting from Lori’s family for the first time is her father Bob and stepmom Louise from Somerset.

My niece Deborah Burgess is here enjoying the week along with her daughters Amanda Brown and Rhiana Burgess.

It is also great to have our cousins, Mike and Abby Brennen, and their children, Fiona and Micela. Abby’s parents and my cousins Ralph and Betsy Grant came for the Fourth from Shelton, Conn. and on their way they picked up Ralph’s mom, Cora Grant, who happens to be my godmother, to enjoy all the festivities. They all had a great time getting the candy and other little prizes from the floats.

If you have some news, Fourth of July or otherwise, please do not hesitate to share with us.

Have a great week and keep the home candles burning.
