Pamela Brock and her friend Docia Reed, both neighbors in Waltham, spent a glorious week over the Fourth visiting Pam’s mom, Leigh Smith. The weather was perfect, yet hot, as you well know. The ladies got plenty of things done and caught up with Pam’s friends. They were delighted to be hosted by Leigh. Look for Pam’s return in August.

When Stephen and Judy Nichols celebrated their wedding anniversary on July 9, I forgot to mention the cast of the ceremony. The Rev. Thomas Lehman performed the vows at Grace Church. John B. Nichols, Sr. was the best man. Ann Nichols Perry was the maid of honor. Martha Jane Illingsworth Santos served as a bridesmaid. Leo Amaral was the usher. I’m sure you know most of these participants, some gone, but none forgotten.

Our library is hopping. In honor of famous Vineyard seasonal resident James Cagney and his upcoming birthday, one of my very favorite films may be viewed for free in the program room Tuesday, July 17 at 7 p.m. — with free popcorn and lemonade. I know you know the title; it is about George M. Cohan and his contributions to Broadway. It won three Oscars in 1942, including Cagney as best actor. I’ll see you there.

Also on Tuesday July 17 at the library, the kids’ story hour (10 a.m. for the wee ones and 11 a.m. for those five and up) features best-selling author Becky Loescher reading her new work, Over on the Vineyard. Copies of her book will be available for signing and sale.

Those of you as technically challenged as I am will want to stop at the library tomorrow between 10 a.m. and noon. You will get drop-in help with the CLAMS library eBooks and downloadable audiobooks. There will be an informal demonstration of our library’s “Overdrive” service and the eReader devices, including Nook, Sony Reader and Kindle. I’ll see you there.

Crafts return to the library on Thursday, July 26. All are invited. While you are there don’t miss the July program of Art in the Stacks which features local talent Carolyn Daniele. Carolyn is a multimedia artist who began in ceramic sculpture. She has had shows at almost every gallery you can think of on-Island. Her subjects range from abstract to Vineyard scenes, flowers, landscapes and animals. This show is in watercolor and oils. It is presented by the Friends of the Vineyard Haven Library.

The feedback on the street fair was that it was grand and the food delicious. Same time, next year.

The birthday bandwagon pulls along Nancy McPartlin Gardella, Jaron Schilling, Thomasina Petrone, Karen Lobdell, Nevenka Daniels and Talula Goldberry Martin today. Tomorrow belongs to Ronda MacLeod, Alanna Majors and Bob Wheeler. July 15 honors Pam Alley, Laurel Redington-Whitaker and Courtenay Stanley. July 16 is for Shawna Medeiros, Karen English, Dan Manning and our fire chief, Jon Schilling. July 17 is a party for Christopher Leigh Clark, Daniel Van Landingham, Fred Benson, Jessica Slocum, Barbara Masters and Jay and Dana Bangs. On July 18 we honor Margaret Tileston, Ben Araujo and Paige Donovan, and remember Fred Jingsley. And on July 19 Kenny Hayes takes the cake. Many happy returns.
