Slave Songs

Almost 150 years after the emancipation of slaves in this country, slave songs still bring alive the pain of a past reality and the longing for a better future.

On Saturday, July 21, at 7 p.m., at the Union Chapel in Oak Bluffs, Jim Thomas and his Spirituals Choir return for their annual July concert. The program is entitled Songs from the Field: The Mystery of Slave Songs, and features authentic African slave songs from American history. The choir performs from their seats, as working slaves did. They will be accompanied by percussion instruments and joined by vocalist Christina Montoya and organist Lavert Stuart.

The cost is $15 for adults. Children 12 and under are free. Tickets are available on ticketsmv.com and at the door.
