Next Friday, August 24, Angela Davis and Gina Dent will present a lecture at Union Chapel in Oak Bluffs entitled Reports from Palestine. The talk begins at 5:30 p.m. and tickets are $15 in advance, $20 at the door.

Angela Davis has been at the forefront of human rights activism since the 1960’s when she burst on the scene as a prominent radical, with her trademark afro. She was a member of the Communist Party USA and the Black Panthers and she has, over the decades, fought for prisoners’ rights after her own time spent in prison, for which she was later acquitted. Ms. Davis is a retired professor with the History of Consciousness Department at the University of California, Santa Cruz and is the former director of the university’s Feminist Studies department. She was also twice a candidate for Vice President on the Communist Party USA ticket during the 1980s.

Gina Dent has followed in the footsteps of Ms. Davis, and is currently an associate professor at the University of California, Santa Cruz. The two women were part of a delegation of women of color who visited the Occupied Territories in July of 2011. Their talk will focus on this experience. Proceeds from the evening will support the educational and organizing activities of the Boston chapter of Jewish Voice for Peace.
