There were so many exhibits to take in last weekend at the Agricultural Fair. Some were big (water buffalo anyone?), and some were quite small. No, we’re not talking about pygmy goats here, although they were quite cute. The wee exhibit being highlighted here is the Bonsai. Admit it, upon encountering the small cultivated tree, it is hard not to fall prey to an 80’s flashback. Suddenly Mr. Miyagi is again schooling young Ralph Macchio in the skilled patience of bonsai cultivation during the first Karate Kid movie, and you, too, are enthralled.

Well, the bonsai does not have to just remain a lingering memory, from the fair or quarter-century-old movies. Anyone interested in a hands-on approach is invited by the Martha’s Vineyard Bonsai Club to become a member. They meet the second Tuesday of each month at either Polly Hill Arboretum or Donoroma’s.
