Harvey Burrell was recently selected to receive a Curb Scholarship in Creative Enterprise and Public Leadership at Vanderbilt University, highlighting his strong record of creative achievement, leadership and public service.

The Curb Scholars program prepares students to imagine, invent, develop and implement innovations, and to critically engage the way innovation shapes the public good.

Mr. Burrell, who grew up in Vineyard Haven and now lives in East Boston, pursued his childhood passion for filmmaking during his high school years. He continues to produce commercial, narrative and documentary work after co-founding Wind Powered Productions.

The small cohort of students chosen to participate in the Curb program engage in creative practice workshops and leadership salons led by top faculty, artists, designers and creative executives from across the country, coupled with a summer internship in Washington, D.C.

The scholars play a leading role in Vanderbilt’s Creative Campus Initiative, and have the opportunity to bring a senior-year legacy project to fruition with mentoring and support from faculty and staff.

This summer Mr. Burrell worked on the kickstarter-funded film Endless Abilities, which explores how adaptive sports change the lives of those with physical challenges all across this country. He is majoring in film theory.

The Curb Scholars program is modeled after the career of Mike Curb — founder of Curb Records, philanthropist, and former lieutenant governor of California.
