Chilmark is strangely quiet as I write early this week. It has been a long gray day with rain threatening but not falling yet. The traffic pattern is very different than that of August. However, it is just temporary. Our harbor master tells me that the Point Independence Yacht Club is headed here for their annual end of summer cruise and he expects about 14 boats to come to Menemsha.

The community center has closed for the season and the flea markets of the Chilmark Community Church are done for this year. The Home Port restaurant is closed for the season, however Beach Plum Inn is still serving breakfast, bites and dinner. The Chilmark library is back on winter hours and the Chilmark School started yesterday, Thursday. The Bite and Beetlebung are closing on Tuesday each week and the fish markets, the Galley, the Menemsha Market and the Chilmark store remain open. Hope this helps your Chilmark plans.

We send condolences to the family of Brian Cioffi whose dad, Tony Peter Cioffi, died on August 15 and was laid to rest at Abel’s Hill on Sept. 2. He lived an interesting life and will be missed by his large circle of family and friends.

Kristin Maloney, children’s librarian at the Chilmark library, will continue the story time at the library from 10 to 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday and Saturdays.

Garth and Ollie Edwards are back at their Essex, Conn. home after a few days at their Abel’s Hill home. They were joined by four generations of the Edwards family who came to celebrate Garth’s 97th birthday. Their many Island friends joined in the festivities. Cheers from us all!

Remember that Sunday is Lia Kahler’s concert, Heavenly Sounds, for the benefit of the Chilmark Community Church. She will perform with Richard Gordon and Philip Dietterich. There will be a silent auction beginning at 2 p.m. and the musical program will begin at 3 p.m. There will be a reception following the concert.

There will be a flu clinic at the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School on Saturday, Sept. 22 from 8 a.m. to noon. You may call the Chilmark Board of Health for more information. The newspapers are including the details also.
