Both soccer teams play at home this week, with the boys taking on Bishop Stang on Tuesday at 3 p.m. and the girls playing Mashpee on Thursday at 3 p.m.

In an eleventh-hour save, senior Brandon Watkins scored a touchdown with 43 seconds left on the clock to put the Vineyarders ahead 28-26 over opponents Bristol-Plymouth last Friday night.

“We threw the ball well, we ran the ball well...it was a much better performance offensively,” head coach Donald Herman said. The defense, still lacking a few key players due to injuries, struggled in the game, giving up a touchdown on a kickoff return late in the second quarter to tie the game.

Watkins scored the first touchdown on a pass from quarterback Alec Tattersall, who notched a 1-yard touchdown of his own in the second quarter. Kicker Mike Cutrer provided the extra point. In the third, Watkins rushed in another score, with junior Joe Turney nailing the two-point conversion.

Coach Herman praised the contributions of the players slotted out of their regular positions; John Henry O’Shaughnessy played linebacker for the first time, while Andrew Walsh took on the role of fullback.

The Vineyarders play Brighton tonight at 5:15 in an away game.

The girls move to a 3-0-1 record after picking up a 4-2 win in last Thursday’s league opener against Bishop Stang. Tuesday’s game against Somerset was re-scheduled due to rain.

Bishop Stang has won the Eastern Athletic Conference league title for the past three seasons.

“If that’s any indication of things to come, that makes me very excited,” coach Lisa Knight said.

The Spartans jumped on the board early in the first half, going up 2-0, but a timeout and regrouping for the Vineyarders resulted in a quick goal by junior Kat Dorr (assisted by junior Issy Smith).

In the second half, senior Kendall Robinson connected with senior Taylor Poggi to even the score 2-2. Robinson also assisted on the final two Vineyard goals, scored by junior Chantal Booker and senior Katie Stewart, respectively.

“There’s an incredible diversity of people scoring goals right now,” coach Knight said. “ It’s just everyone in the team contributing in every different area.” On the defensive side of the field, senior goalie Kathryn Antonsen had a standout performance, and senior Tayla Kuehne “just stepped right up and had an incredible game,” said coach Knight.

The Vineyarders are away for next week, taking on Pembroke, West Bridgewater, and Westport. Scores from Thursday’s game against Needham were unavailable at press time.

The team holds a 3-4 record on the season after splitting this week’s matches against Whitman-Hanson and league opponent Coyle Cassidy.

“It’s been a little bit of an up and down season,” coach Doug deBettencourt said. “I think we have a good veteran team, but we haven’t really quite played up to our expectations yet.”

On Monday, the team traveled to Whitman-Hanson for a 231-244 win. Senior Kat deBettencourt shot a 31 for the overall low score.

Senior Brendan Maseda had the low score in Tuesday’s close 253-256 loss to Coyle, shooting a 39.

Scores from Thursday’s match against Bishop Feehan were unavailable at press time. The team hosts Cape Cod Regional Tech and Scituate at Farm Neck on Monday and Wednesday next week.

Boys Soccer

The boys tied with Nauset on Saturday evening in their home opener, going 1-1 against the Warriors. Earlier this month, the Vineyarders fell 5-1 to Nauset in an away match.

Senior Jack Roberts scored the first Vineyard goal early in the first, but Nauset took advantage of a penalty kick to even the match with five minutes left before halftime.

Girls’ Soccer

After a 2-1 loss to Whitinsville-Christian last Saturday, the girls rebounded with a 2-0 win over Dennis-Yarmouth Monday afternoon.

The first goal against D-Y was “a thing of beauty,” head coach Richard Bennett said. Junior Mariah Campbell made a direct kick from 35 yards out on a re-start, which senior Jennie Lindland connected with for a header.

Lindland also scored the second goal of the game, on a soft roller that edged past the Dolphins goalie.

On Saturday, the girls held their opponents to an 0-0 tie through the first half. Lindland scored on a breakaway early in the second, but Whitinsville pulled away on the strength of senior Molly Stark.

The Vineyarders begin league play this week with away matches against Coyle-Cassidy and Bishop Stang.
