The Martha’s Vineyard Center for Living will hold the first in a series of fall and winter cultural luncheons on Saturday, Oct. 20 from noon to 2 p.m. at the Grill on Main. Chef Anthony Saccoccia and his staff will once again provide a culturally delicious luncheon. The coming 2012-2013 series of luncheons will focus on the arts and cultural community of the Vineyard since 1973. The theme for the series ties in with Arts Martha’s Vineyard, a collaboration of members of the Vineyard’s arts, culture and business communities to promote and support the arts on the Vineyard during the month of October. The Martha’s Vineyard Chamber of Commerce is a lead organizer for the month of activities, co-sponsored by the Martha’s Vineyard Times. In addition, October is National Arts and Humanities Month.

The featured speaker for the Oct. 20 luncheon is David R. White of The Yard. He also served as executive director and producer of the Dance Theater Workshop in New York from 1975 to 2003. For reservations, please call Leslie Clapp at 508-939-9440.

The Martha’s Vineyard Public Charter School will host a Rock Auction on Oct. 13 at Flatbread Pizza from 6 to 11 p.m. Paul Karasik will once again most likely be dressed as Elvis for the evening. Please join Paul in your best 1960s fashions that you still may have in your closets, i.e. those shiny bright go-go boots, mini skirts, vests, etc. For $25 you may have all the pizza you can eat and dine on salad as well. Enjoy the dance party while raising funds for the school. Do not forget the spectacular auction!

October is also Family History Month - share your family stories with your young ones. Document your stories, work on your ancestry charts and family group sheets, and learn more about your ancestors together.

October is also Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Martha’s Vineyard Breast Cancer Support Group invites breast cancer patients, survivors and caregivers to Get Your Pink On!, a fun event to be held on Wednesday, Oct. 17 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Isabelle’s Beach House, 83 Seaview avenue in Oak Bluffs. Kerri Medeiros of the American Cancer Society will be the guest speaker. Enjoy mini massages, reiki therapy, jin shin jyutsu therapy, Mary Kay makeup, refreshments and door prizes.

Enjoy story hour at the Aquinnah Public Library on Thursday afternoons at 3:30 p.m. There will be a day of pumpkin decorating; please check the schedule at the library for more information.

Aquinnah town clerk Carolyn Feltz would like to remind one and all that the last day to register to vote is Oct. 17 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 8 p.m. or during weekdays. Absentee ballots may be requested by downloading a form online from the state’s website at sec.state.ma.us. Just click absentee ballot.

All the best to Ernest Barrett as he retired from the Vineyard Transit Authority as a driver for the past decade. Ernie will be missed, especially for his humor.

Betty Joslow enjoyed a weekend visit with her daughter Wendy, as well as with her granddaughter and her friend.

Get well wishes to Ted Leslie who returned to his home this week after being a patient at Martha’s Vineyard Hospital.

Captain Buddy Vanderhoop has been smiling more than usual lately. He and his wife Lisa have enjoyed the company of his daughters Heather of California and Amy of Hawaii. They have enjoyed visiting family and friends while dining at their aunt Julianne’s Orange Peel Bakery for pizza, and a grand lobster boil at their grandmother Anne Vanderhoop Madison’s home. Their visit was to encourage and support their dad as he prepares for his treatments at Massachusetts General Hospital. Their sister Emily and her son William are expected to come back from Hawaii, after returning there in September.

Get well wishes to Edwin D. Vanderhoop who has been a patient at Martha’s Vineyard Hospital.

Lisa Bibko Vanderhoop will have a show of her Vineyard Seadogs 2013 calendars, as well as Christmas and greeting cards of Vineyard scenes and dogs at the Bank of Martha’s Vineyard at Beetlebung Corner for the month of Oct. Stop by and find a few treasures for the holiday season.

The Potter’s Wheel was recently torn down across the way from Echo Hill. The home was previously owned by Viola Vanderhoop MacDiarmid, Mary Lenom and Carl and Deborah Mehne. The new owners will soon rebuild a new home.

Condolences to the family and friends of James M. Beckman. Jim was a fellow classmate in the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School class of 1964. He then headed to Boston in 1964, as did many of our classmates. In later years it was a pleasure having Jim as a VTA bus driver. He is survived by his beautiful daughter, Laura Beckman, and by his dear friend Eniko Delisle and her family.

Condolences to the family and friends of Preston Harris, former schoolmate at Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School. Preston is survived by his brother, Kendall Harris, and their sister, Tracy Harris Stillman. He is also survived by his spouse, Aihua Sun Harris, and their son Yongda.

Condolences to the family and friends of Michael Renahan who passed away recently. Mike was always very serious but jovial by the end of his discussions. I will never tell where he would let all those skunks loose into the wild once he had captured them. In his retirement Mike was the clerk of the works on the tribal community center building during construction in 2004 and 2005, where his construction knowledge was greatly appreciated.
