The 67th annual Martha’s Vineyard Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby ended tonight at 10 p.m. with the ringing of bells. Bailen Darack, 4, and her older brother Mateo, 8, of Vineyard Haven stood up on the derby headquarters weigh table and rang the bell, bringing the five-week-old contest to an end. They were escorted by Charlie Smith, weigh master.
More than 3,000 fishermen participated in the contest. Tomorrow the grand winners in eight categories will be entered into a drawing at the final awards ceremony for a brand new Eastern powerboat and a Chevrolet truck.
Shore anglers Robert J. Boyhan, who caught the largest bluefish, at 15.39 pounds; Tony H. Rezendes, Jr., who weighed in a 32.12 pound striped bass; Julian G. Pepper, who caught an 8.22 pound bonito; and Morgan T. Taylor, who caught a 13.22 pound false albacore, will be entered in a drawing for the boat.
Boat anglers Adam Cummings, who caught a 16.06 pound bluefish; Stephen J. Pietruska, who caught a 44.40 pound striped bass; Andrew M. Wheeler, who caught a 10.29 pound bonito; and Patrick T. Jenkinson, who caught the largest false albacore from a boat, a 12.75 pound fish, will vie for the Chevrolet truck.
Hundreds of prizes will be handed out tomorrow, Sunday, at a 1 p.m. ceremony at Farm Neck Golf Course. The event will culminate with a drawing for the two grand prizes.
