Aquinnah saw a steady stream of voters all day, with a line and even voters waiting at times. Very encouraging to have 75 per cent of the voters cast their ballots, with 25 per cent of the votes cast by absentee ballots. President Barack Obama received the most votes in Aquinnah, at 63 per cent. Congressman William Keating was also a favorite. And congratulations to Sen. Elizabeth Warren — our first woman senator in the Commonwealth. Obviously her visits to the Vineyard were worthwhile. Republican Joseph Sollitto even won in this sleepy little democratic community.
Now, back to reality — a nor’easter bore down upon us Wednesday morning. The winds howled and the remnants of leaves on the trees disappeared very quickly. The surf churned away. Thank you to our Aquinnah police, fire and ambulance crews for providing safety and security for us during the visit Hurricane Sandy made last week.
The Aquinnah public library will be honoring retiring library director Cathy Thompson the afternoon of Tuesday, Nov. 13. Stop by to wish Cathy well.
There will be a special town meeting on Thursday, Nov. 15 at 7 p.m. at the Aquinnah town hall. There are only a few items on the warrant for your voting approval. It should take less than an hour, and 40 voters are required for a quorum.

Congratulations to Stony Creek gift shop for winning a beautification award from the Martha’s Vineyard Garden Club for their garden area in front of Carla Giles Cuch and Berta Giles Welch’s shop at the cliffs area. Stony Creek is still open weekends during the month of November, and will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. from the day before Thanksgiving through Nov. 25 for your shopping pleasure. Great sales.
Condolences to the family and friends of Corinne LeBovit who passed away at the home of her daughter on Nov. 1. She and her daughter Elise created a beautiful remembrance of the Belain family with the genealogy and history of the Belain homestead, which is now the Duck Inn. Her past two years have been spent in Aquinnah with her doting daughter, Elise. She is survived by her daughters Elise and Suzanne and granddaughter Gabrielle. A celebration of her life will be held in the spring.
Get well wishes to Kristina Kestenbaum Leslie who underwent orthopedic surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital on Wednesday. Kristina returned home on Saturday after spending a week in California visiting her family. She spent time in San Clemente with her daughter Samantha and husband, Cliff, and grandchildren Madeline and Jack. Ciff also enjoyed a visit from his mother Mary, of Manhattan, at the same time. Then it was off to Los Angeles with daughter Jennifer, her husband, Doug, and grandchildren Max and Charlie. While there, she attended their soccer and hockey games, but was especially pleased when young Max and his band won second prize in the battle of the bands at the House of Blues in Hollywood.
