Chilmark is lit! Many holiday lights are glowing at night all around town. A ride on any of our roads will get you into the holiday spirit. Of special notice is the U.S. Coast Guard station on the hill in Menemsha. It is most cheerful, as are all the displays. The lobsterpot tree in front of the Chandelry on Basin Road is worth the ride up-Island . . . don’t miss it!

News from town hall is that there is a need for three new members on the conservation commission. Please consider whether or not you would be a fit for one of the jobs. If so, please call town hall or go on the town website for more information. There is also an opening for a town accountant.

The Chilmark Community Church welcomed their new pastor, Seomgmom Ahn, to the congregation. He and his family, originally from Korea, will soon be living in the Parsonage next door to the Chilmark church. Services begin at 9 a.m. Sunday mornings and all are welcome.

The West Tisbury Congregational Church invites us all to attend two services on Christmas Eve. There will be a service with music at the agricultural hall beginning at 4:30 p.m. Later that day, there will be a solemn candlelight service at the church at 10 p.m. All are welcome to both services.

We send condolences this week to the family and Island friends of Jean Morse Joseph of Cleveland. Jean was a daughter of Warren and Theresa Morse, who founded the renowned Beach Plum Inn. Jean spent many summers in Chilmark with her parents and sister, Carol. She had many friends here and was a faithful visitor for many years throughout her adult years and varied career. She leaves her nephew, Jim Feiner, and his family in Chilmark. Jean was a happy person that shared her positive spirit with all she met. She will be missed.

The Friends of the Chilmark library will host their annual holiday party on Dec. 19 at 4:30 p.m. All are welcome. The annual book sale is ongoing during regular library hours through the end of December. Please note that the library will be closed on Christmas Eve and Christmas day.

The Firefighters Association is preparing for Santa’s annual visit to the Chilmark Community Center on Dec. 19. All Chilmark children are welcome to the festivities!

Remember not to panic — much of your holiday shopping can be done in town. Scott McDowell has his shop, Copper Works, open on Basin Road. Also on Basin Road, the Chandelry is open for your boaters’ needs. Down on South Road the Allen Farm shop is open most days. The gas station is the perfect stop for stocking stuffers for all ages. Shop till you drop!

Conrad and Jane Neumann have headed back to North Carolina after an extended stay in town due to medical needs. They plan to return for their annual summer visit in June.

Congratulations to Barbara Rivers, who is celebrating a significant birthday this week. We wish her another busy year in Chilmark!

Please email me your holiday comings and goings as we all enjoy sharing in the general good times of the community!
