Happy New Year one and all with hope of a more peaceful world. We had a slight dusting of snow over the weekend and temperatures have been bone-chilling. So much for the global warming we thought would remain after such a mild winter in 2012. Not so. Temperatures will drop to the single digits this week for the overnight hours. Scalloping will be on hold until it warms up again. Stay warm.
Congratulations to Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School students on their first quarter honor roll achievements: Alayna Hutchinson, a senior with high honors, Ella Madison Mahoney, a senior on the honor roll, Josie Iadicicco, a sophomore with high honors, Emerson Mahoney, a freshman with high honors, and Mason Jeffers, a freshman with honors.

Noah James Manning returned home on Monday afternoon after spending five days in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., with his Kistner clan at the home of his grandparents Bill and Joan. Many more Christmas gifts for this youngest grandchild on all family trees. On Saturday Noah took the train into New York city with his parents Paul and Theresa. He had a delightful trip to Rockefeller Plaza, the M and M store, the Lego store, and FAO Schwartz. Then it was back to reality in Aquinnah. On New Year’s Eve he entertained his neighbors, Olive and Violet MacPhail, in celebration of their seventh birthday.
Gary Paraboschi and Barbara Wallen visited with family and friends in Boston during the holiday and have returned to their new home overlooking Lobsterville.
Condolences to the family and friends of Freda Madeline (Belain) Madison Rocker who passed away at her home in Boston on Dec. 31, surrounded by the love and presence of her family. Freda was the daughter of the late Daniel and Blanche (Jerrod) Belain of what was once Gay Head. She once served as a town clerk for the town of Gay Head before moving to Boston in 1963. She was an Aquinnah Wampanoag tribal elder and probably the last to create beautifully handmade braided rugs. Freda is survived by her children Jeffrey Madison of Aquinnah, Kathleen Williams, Stephen Madison, and Jean Ann Madison, all of Boston, as well as her grandchildren Wenonah Madison Sauer, Shawn Williams, Tiffany Madison, Amira Madison, Camille Madison, Hakeem Madison, Tanisha Crayton, Channell Madison-Fils, and Jannette Dias. She is also survived by 11 great-grandchildren including Alaysha Bedell who lovingly cared for Freda in her final days. Graveside services will be held this afternoon under the guidance of Chapman, Cole and Gleason at the North Cemetery in Aquinnah at 2:30 p.m. with a gathering at the Aquinnah town hall following. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Aquinnah Cultural Center, 20 Black Brook Road, Aquinnah, would be appreciated.
