Even though the weather has been warm, the days have been dreary. Now we are waiting for some rain, maybe a little bit of snow, then maybe a cold patch coming this weekend. It has been very hard to dress this winter. I guess the best way is in layers.

Happy birthday to all who celebrated their day this past week. Big balloons go out to Joseph Ruzzo, who celebrated his day Jan. 12; Kyle Rollins, Jan. 15; Elias Gundersen and James Murray, Jan. 16; Emma Coulter, Tyler Grasing and Jonathan Medeiros, Jan. 17; and to William Thornton, who celebrates his day today, Jan. 18.

Special wishes go to my co-worker Laura Hacker-Durbin, who was the guest of honor at her home for a milestone birthday hosted by her husband Randy. Laura was surprised by many friends and lots of homemade food. It was a great night and we wish her many more happy birthdays.

Many people are asking around about Kathy Perry, who is a patient at Massachusetts General Hospital after an accident at a horse farm. Kathy is making progress. She is now able to sit up in bed, is responding to questions and recognizes her sister Jean and other people. Her address is: Kathy Perry, Mass General Hospital, 55 Fruit Street, Lunder Building, Room 862, Boston, MA 02114. I am sure she would love to hear from her Island friends.

I was browsing through Facebook and looked at Linley Dolby’s post of photography, only to find it was by Bob Avakian. Bob and his wife Gail have lived in Edgartown for almost 40 years. He’s known to most as a home builder, but he’s also a wonderful photographer whose work has been exhibited at the Griffin Museum of Photography in Winchester; the Gallery Seven in Maynard; the Greg Moon Gallery in Taos, N.M. and in Photography Atelier exhibitions at the Griffin Museum. He was selected as a Photolucida Critical Mass 2012 Finalist, and in the 2012 International Photography Awards (IPA) 10th Annual competition was awarded honorable mention in a number of categories, most notably for Night Photography and Fine Art Landscapes. He is a juried member of the Cape Cod Art Association and the South Shore Art Center in Cohasset. Check out his work at lenscratch.com/2013/01/photonola-bog-avakian.html.

This was the statement written about Bob on the website: “I had the opportunity to spend time with Bob Avakian’s glowing prints at PhotoNOLA. His mastery of light, of sense of place, and his ability to create one image narratives made for a wonderful portfolio. Bob’s background in architecture and home building, and his years on Martha’s Vineyard have given him a particular sensibility to his environment.”

Good for you, Bob; we look forward to more of your work.

Have a great week and keep the home candles burning.
