JUNE D. MANNING

Winter is upon us. For those who thought global warming was forever after a mild winter in 2012, let’s think again. The temperatures have been below freezing; we had about half a foot of snow on Monday night, and on Wednesday morning it was minus seven degrees Fahrenheit (with wind chill). More snow is on the way over the weekend. It is best to stay inside and read or knit. The Inauguration took our minds off the weather for most of Monday and what a grand celebration it was. Of course we were all very proud and thrilled to see James Taylor perform and then being interviewed on channel 7 News.
The Aquinnah Public Library is offering a fine amnesty until Valentine’s Day. Please return your materials along with a donation to the Island Food Pantry such as canned foods, packaged dinners, condiments, paper goods, hot beverage mixes, personal care items such as shampoo and lotion, etc. For more information, please call the library at 508-645-2314. Barbara Lampson still has story hour on Thursday afternoons at 3:30 p.m. Thank you to James Dodd for sending photographs of Mrs. Dodd who taught at the one-room Gay Head School in the 1940’s. Stop by, perhaps you will recognize some of the students sitting at their old wooden desks.
The Martha’s Vineyard Center for Living will sponsor their first cultural luncheon of the new year on Saturday, Jan. 26, from noon to 2 p.m. at The Grill on Main in Edgartown. Tickets are still available and reservations may be secured by calling Leslie Clapp at 508-939-9440. Tickets are $25 per person.

Congratulations to my friends at the Vineyard Gazette Remy Tumin, Sara Brown and Ivy Ashe for their nominations for an award at the New England Press and Newspaper Association which will be held at an awards ceremony in Boston in February.
Get well wishes to Eddie Fantasia as he is recuperating at Children’s Hospital. He has been moved from ICU and his family anticipates he will be home by the weekend.
Marjorie Vanderhoop Galbraith and her daughter Polly were the guests of Natalie Francis over the weekend while here to attend the services for her brother Edwin D. Vanderhoop. Paul Galbraith arrived for the day on Sunday to spend time with his extended family.
Congratulations to Kevin Sheehan and Jennifer “Jeffie” Butler on the birth of their son Orrin Thomas Sheehan on Jan. 16 in Aspen, CO. Orrin was welcomed home by his six year old sister Maeve. He is the grandson of Lenny and Mallory Butler, great grandson of Marilyn Butler, and nephew of Maxwell and Nina Butler. We will await his Aquinnah arrival over the next few months.
Condolences to the family and friends of Gloria Scher who passed away on Jan. 16 in New York. Services were held on Jan. 18. Gloria was a long time Aquinnah summer resident and a truly amazing artist. Her Aquinnah friends and neighbors attended her last show on the Vineyard at the Louisa Gould Gallery. She was one of the many ladies who attend the pool almost each day throughout the summer in Aquinnah. Gloria is survived by her sons Peter and Michael, grandchildren Roxanne Lerner and Travis Scher, as well as by her first cousin Gloria Levitas.
Condolences to the family and friends of Edwin D. Vanderhoop who passed away at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital on Jan. 16 surrounded by the love and the presence of his family. Edwin was pleased to be able to return to Aquinnah over the past decade after residing in upstate New York for many years. He found comfort in being with his four generations of family members who were around him each day. Edwin enjoyed traveling with the Elders of the Aquinnah Tribe and especially luncheons off-Island. His greatest honor beyond that of his being the patriarch of his large extended family was that of being a World War II Veteran. He was a communicant of Community Baptist Church of Gay Head. Services were conducted by Reverend Ellen Tatreau and held at the Community Baptist Church on Monday with burial at North Cemetery under the services of Chapman Cole and Gleason.
Congratulations to Captain William D. Vanderhoop, Jr. aka Captain Buddy who has completed his 48 sessions of radiation therapy at Massachusetts General Hospital.
