The Steamship Authority will take a look at establishing a policy for unaccompanied children traveling on their ferries.
At the monthly meeting of the Steamship Authority governors Tuesday in Woods Hole, the board discussed creating a policy that would set a minimum age for travel by unaccompanied minors.
Currently, the authority requires children five years of age or under to be accompanied by an adult. A summary of the board’s meeting noted that other ferry operators or transportation providers have policies requiring adult accompaniment for children under the age of 12 or 13, and that the Steamship Authority feels they should establish a similar age limit.
The board will consider adopting a policy at their next meeting, after asking for feedback from customers who would be impacted by the proposal.
The board also approved an inter-island automobile excursion rate so residents of Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard can visit the other island without having to pay a regular round-trip ticket.
The excursion rate, applicable for an automobile and up to two adults and two children, will be equal to the combination of the two islands’ vehicle excursion rates. Travel must be completed within 31 days from departure.
For cars under 17 feet in length, this year’s rates would range from $221 to $312.
In other news, the new Steamship Authority website is expected to launch in the next three weeks.
