Spring is less than a month away. We are now awaiting another snow storm this weekend. That will make it three weekends in a row with snow. Then we have a day or two of rain which then turns to ice. Mid-week it tends to tease us by warming up to a comfortable temperature only to face another weekend with snow. On occasion it brings good cheer, especially when my former co-worker Griffin Hughes and her dearly beloved Morgan Douglas married despite the blizzard on Feb. 9. Or the cheers from the children sledding down the hill at Aquinnah Circle on Feb. 10. But then we hear about the slipping and sliding while afoot or in automobiles and one would just wish winter would be over, once and for all. Even if we can get beyond this one last weekend in February, we will be that much closer to spring and a little less snow.
There will be a potluck jam at the Chilmark Community Center this evening at 6 p.m. Join in the festivities with Dan Waters and his fellow musicians.
The Up-Island Regional School District of Martha’s Vineyard and the School Committee and the Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head (Aquinnah) met on Tuesday evening at the tribal building. Budgetary items topped the agenda and the enrollment projections were forecast. The group then met with the Aquinnah Selectmen for further discussions regarding the budget. Thank you to Roxane Ackerman who has been the Aquinnah representative on the school committee for the past 30 years — quite a commitment to our community.
While the students are on school vacation next week, the Martha’s Vineyard Museum with Christopher Murphy (guest curator) will instruct children between the ages of 5 and 12 in decoy painting on Wednesday, Feb. 27 at 1 p.m. Reservations are required. Congratulations to Melissa Mahoney on her admission to the Alpha Iota Chapter of Pi Theta Epsilon Occupational Therapy Honor Society at Creighton University where she is working on her doctoratal degree. Melissa is the occupational therapist at the West Tisbury School and the Tisbury School. Melissa and her husband James are the parents of Aileen and Seamus. She is the daughter of Kevan and Marcy Nichols of Tisbury. Get well wishes to young Isaac Moreis, son of Leigh and Christy, who was a patient at Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. He has been treated for pneumonia for the past two weeks.
Happy housewarming to Hollis Smith and his wife Robin Robinson. They recently moved into their new home on Attaquin Way. They will share their new place with Robin’s mother Virginia Robinson. Welcome to the neighborhood. This week I completed my course of physical therapy to get my shoulder back into shape. My arm finally feels as though it once again belongs to me. Thank you immensely to Deborah Shipkin, Larry Greenberg and their intern Chelsea Le-Blanc for my intensive physical therapy at Greenberg PT. It is encouraging to realize that surgery was not necessary nor was a sling, and the comfort of feeling better once again is so encouraging.
Todd and Meredith Trimmer were at their Aquinnah home over the past week while their children were on school vacation.
Happy 39th anniversary wishes to Mark and Sue Lana Shea who were married at the Gay Head town hall on Feb. 23, 1974 in the middle of a blizzard.

Tribal elder Barbara Perry Francis will celebrate her special day on Feb. 27. Jacob Antonio Bazzy will be 12 years old on Feb. 27 and shares the day with Robert Iadicicco.
