Last Sunday we were slammed again by another coastal snowstorm. The SSA cancelled boats on Sunday and Monday and the Congregational Church was forced to cancel worship services for the second week in a row. The annual church meeting was postponed until Sunday. This is the first time in my memory that church was postponed for two consecutive weeks!

Today marks the beginning of the school vacation week for Vineyard public schools. If you thought it was quiet last week, be prepared as it will feel like virtually every one has left Dodge. Next Friday National Pig Day will be celebrated by those of us who are left on the rock. Spring is around the corner. As old timers would say, the back of winter has been broken.

Anthony Gude and Annie Fehr, of Marysville, Kan., were married last week on Squibnocket beach. They both took off their boots to be married, but it was a clear day, the calm before the storm. Congratulations to the happy couple!

Joanne Scott has returned from a vacation. During her absence in the storm two weeks ago her electric power cable took a beating from the bad weather and Bob Lewis was hired to repair it.

Tomorrow at the Agricultural Hall they will be getting the jump on National Pig Day by holding a fundraiser for the society: an all-day sausage festival. In the morning experts will teach you how to make sausage, and at 6 p.m. there will be a sausage dinner with sauerkraut and cabbage as well as other side dishes. Bring your own place setting and beverage. Live music will follow with the Day Trippers. You may buy your tickets at the door.

Anna Carringer over at the museum reports that children can spend an afternoon of school vacation week with Chris Murphy, guest curator of their latest exhibit The Art of the Hunt: Martha’s Vineyard Decoys. Chris will show examples of traditional Vineyard decoys and talk about the different bird species on the Island before kids are invited to paint their own duck to take home with them.

Reservations are required for accurate materials count. If the first class fills, more will be scheduled. Call Chris at 508-627-4441, extension 110 to reserve your child’s spot. The activity is appropriate for ages five to 12.

Marjory Potts reports that the storm last weekend postponed their scheduled films about the creative life. The films will be shown Sunday, March 3, at 4 p.m. at the Martha’s Vineyard Hebrew Center.

History notes: On Feb. 28, 1946, Willis Gifford, of Laconia, N.H., arrived in town and spent several days preparing his house located directly across the street from the Grange Hall for rental. Mr. and Mrs. Grafton King and their family of New Bedford, former residents of this town, were planning to return on the first of April to occupy the house. Albion Alley purchased the former Sanderson Mayhew house owned by his daughter Mabel Mayhew Watkins. Grafton would again be employed as the lead mechanic at Donaldson’s Garage, owned and operated by Bert and Inez Cahoon, two doors up the street.

Happy birthday to: Samantha Church and Roy Cavanaugh today; Ellen Wolfe, Sally Segall, Stuart Gardner, Lukas Higgins Julie Flanders and Joanne Peterson tomorrow; Brenda McMorrow, Frank Polagruto, Ernie Mendenhall, Kevin Carr, Tom Ronan, Dennis Jason and Diane Wall on Sunday; Steve Gallagher, Alison Welles, Kelly Arruda and Susie Bowman on Monday; Katherine Athearn, Ann Nevin, Mason Fischer and Natasha Taylor on Tuesday; Gene Bergeron, Shawn Emin, Stephanie Wade, David Merna and Kevin McFarland on Wednesday; Tom Thatcher, Andrew Kennedy, Susan Goldstein, Sam Alley and George Brush on Thursday. Belated birthday wishes to Jackie Baer, Doug Fortes, Nick Pohl, Angie Smith and Wendy deGeofroy.

Well that is all the social news for this week. I don’t want to miss the news about your vacation so please call or e-mail me with details. Have a great week.
