They were seeking to reel in stripers and bluefish for the annual derby. Instead, Caleb Nicholson, Neal Farrell and John Thomas (JT) Maher reeled in three stranded fishermen whose boat sank miles off the coast of Aquinnah and were clinging to a cooler in the chilly, rough seas.

On April 4, the American Red Cross, Cape Cod and Islands chapter will recognize Mr. Nicholson, Mr. Farrell and Mr. Maher’s quick, life-saving actions at the annual Heroes Breakfast in Hyannis.

The breakfast honors those who perform extraordinary acts of courage by saving someone’s life or helping in the rescue of someone in need, as well as those who commit countless hours of service to an organization or community. Tickets to the breakfast are available by visiting redcross.org/ma/hyannis or by calling 508-775-1540; they are expected to sell out.
