Jan Norton called me to say she had red-winged blackbirds on her feeder. That is a sure sign of changing seasons; we used to wait for their call and know spring had arrived — of course, spring appeared to be a lot closer until we heard the recent forecast for wind and snow. We will see who wins out this one.

Happy birthday to all who celebrated their day this past week. Big balloons go out to Kylie Hathaway, who celebrated her day March 2; Camden Emery, March 3; Sally Gordon, March 4; Ryan Nola, March 5; William Bruguiere, March 7; and Kya Maloney, who celebrates her day today, March 8.

I drove by the Dairy Queen and the sign in the window says it will open March 13. I can’t wait. I was starting to have Buster Bar withdrawal.

Zack Waller and his girlfriend Maria were here for five minutes on Tuesday. Zack and Maria, who is from Moscow, are moving into an apartment in Boston and needed furniture. They made a 5 p.m. boat, packed up some supplies and were back on the 9:30 p.m. boat. Talk about a fast trip, but I did get to see them and meet Maria.

Maria is attending Harvard Law School and Zack is waiting to hear about two jobs. Good luck to both of you on your new adventures.

I saw Kelly Hess sporting a nice tan from her trip to California, where she and husband Mark and children Owen and Warner got to spend some family time.

Mike Donaroma is home for a while to check on the nursery and get things started for spring. He will be returning to St. John to get Janice prepared to come back for the summer.

The Martha’s Vineyard Women’s Network is hosting a breakfast social on March 12 at Cafe Moxie from 8 to 9:30 a.m. All are welcome to come mingle, exchange ideas and business cards. The women’s network Small Business Grant will be announced at this event. Grant applications will be available on that day.

Don’t forget to turn your clocks ahead on Saturday night. Yes, we will have light later in the evening, but it will be darker in the mornings, making it a little harder to wake up. Never fear, the birds will help solve that problem.

Have a great week and keep the home candles burning.
