Tisbury police are warning people to be on the alert for a telephone scam under way on the Island that appears to be targeting seniors.
Officer Jeffrey Day told the Gazette late Wednesday that he had received two reports from seniors who had received telephone calls from someone appearing to represent a medical alarm system. People receiving scam calls are being told that a family member had added a product to their service and financial information is needed to pay for the service. The apparent scammers are calling from the telephone number 662-304-3858; the number shows up on caller ID as a wireless telephone number, Officer Day said. He advised people to be aware and not give out any financial information over the telephone.
"Do not engage if you receive a call," Officer Day said.
Police said anyone who receives a scam call and wants to report it may do so by calling the Massachusetts Attorney General's hotline at 617-727-8400. A complaint form may be filled out on the Attorney General's website.
