What beautiful spring weather we’ve been having, but now we are going to get some much needed rain. The trees are bursting with their vibrant colors and we need them to stay that way. Mother Nature will take care of that.
Happy birthday to all who celebrated their day this past week. Big balloons go out to Samuel Resto and Mathew Ribeiro, who celebrated their day April 28. Ella Blodgett celebrated April 29, Aiden Hughes on May 1, Nicholas Rabeni on May 2, Paige Anderson on May 3 and Tayla BenDavid on May 5. Cesar Bueno celebrated his day May 6.
Happy anniversary wishes go out to Pam Dolby and her husband who celebrated May 6. Here is to many more years together!
This is the weekend I refer to as Lilly Pulitzer weekend, also known as the Pink & Green Weekend Celebration. The town will be blanketed in pink and green for many weekend activities. Donaroma’s sets off the pace Friday from 4 to 6 p.m. It is looking like a very good send-off with medieval life, so stop by and join us.
The town will have more activities on Saturday and Sunday and I hear there is a dog show with a pink and green theme. Sounds like a fun weekend.
Mass Audubon and many other Island organizations offer all sorts of ways for regular folks to get involved in scientific monitoring and research projects that increase our knowledge of the natural world. Join them for a day at Felix Neck on Saturday, May 11, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to learn more about these initiatives and ways you can get involved. You can search the beaches for spawning horseshoe crabs and nesting shorebirds, check cover boards in the woods for red-backed salamanders, measure rainfall with our weather monitoring project, dissect scat and much more! Norm Smith, director of Blue Hills Trail Side Museum, is bringing live birds of prey for a presentation at 11 a.m. Start your day off with a bird walk with Robert Culbert at 10 a.m. then explore horseshoe crab habitat at noon. Survey salamanders or identify ordinates (dragonflies and damselflies) at 1 p.m. And if you get hungry the Farm Institute will be selling local burgers for lunch.
Tom Dresser’s new book is titled Women of Martha’s Vineyard. It contains the biographies of several prominent women who made significant contributions to the Island community. From Edgartown he selected Emily Post and Patricia Neal, both whom were known beyond Vineyard shores. He deals with their lives both on the Vineyard and beyond. Women of Martha’s Vineyard makes a great gift for Mother’s Day. The price is $19.99. Tom will be signing Women of Martha’s Vineyard at Edgartown Books at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 11. The book is also available at tomdresser.com.
The Relay for Life is coming up on June 1 and 2. This year it is on Saturday through Sunday, and organizers are hoping to get more walkers out to raise money for a very good cause. There are many activities and lots of raffles. The relay takes place at the high school track. Hope you can come and join in.
I wish all the ladies a very happy Mother’s Day and hope you spend it with the ones you love.
Have a great week and keep the home candles burning.
